Official video for Panic by The Smiths

Panic was released as a single in 1986 & was the first recording to feature new member Craig Gannon. It was later released on the compilation albums The World Won't Listen and Louder Than Bombs.

Lyrics

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?
The leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the grasmere
But honey pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself
Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
It says nothing to me about my life
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play
On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
The provincial towns you jog 'round
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ
Hang the DJ

Rest in peace Andy Rourke. A very underrated bassist.

I love his voice. Such a distinct voice with his warm dialect. Bands like the smith's is hard to find these days.

The way he rolls the r in "provincial" is my favourite bit in the song. Morrissey is truly one of a kind!

The second I saw the title "Hang the DJ", I thought to myself "Man, I hope the song's in it". So glad it was.

One of the greatest British pop songs ever made. It has everything a pop gem needs. An instantly recognizable opening, a hypnotic repeating guitar riff. easy to learn lyrics , sing-a-long anthemic chorus backed by schoolchildren at the end.

I’m here because I lived through the 80s and loved The Smiths and The Cure. Their music helped me survive my teens..
