We're out of the Electrifying studio and back on the road with Nicki Shields and an in-depth road test of the tax efficient 2020 BMW 45e xDrive plug-in hybrid.

BMW was a trailblazer with its electric cars. The i3 and the i8 were amazing-looking and really clever. And then it all went a bit...quiet. But now BMW is back… with a range of hybrids, called iPerformance, which includes a version of the X5 that can work wonders when it comes to reducing your tax bill.

Nicki Shields finds out if you will love the X5 as much as your accountant.

If you like the BMW X5 45e hybrid then we think you should also check out:

Thanks for joining us on our journey to 'Clear the Air' around hybrid and electric cars, we have new videos arriving every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (a mix of studio explainers and road tests) so please subscribe to the channel to find out more!

Harry Garage just did a fairly long term review/update on this, on 1000 something miles, with short and long trips more than 60% was run on electric. Tremendous car.

Good review, thanks. I believe you can think about all the efficiency you want - Modern Diesels, Old time Gas or "who knows" gas/battery hybrid system like this 45e (soon outdated I guess...) BUT the X5 as a car model is still an extremely good car to drive generally. We plan to keep our X5 for a very long time now - repairs, tires etc, all included. It's just a too good car to sell after 5 years...even a new car got every new fancy tech you'd dream off. Our experience...the X5 got everything you need for a LOOOg time -just grab one and enjoy :-))

The battery at 24kwh is bigger than our first Renault Zoe was (20kwh). Things are moving on.

Great video! Won't be long before all SUVs are hybrid!

02:54 units of torque is 'pound foot', as pounds force times the distance in feet not 'pounds per foot' as in pounds divided by feet. If people are buying stuff based on those numbers then yes, getting it right does matter.
Strictly it ought to be Nm, Newton metres, in metric but hey...

I wish mine would do the miles claimed. The most I get from the battery is 38.

can I ask, has what has been the range if run on just purely hybrid? - real world data?

I'm always baffled by how people still get excited about keyless entry. I've got ten year old and fifteen year old Renaults with keyless entry on both of them... And it doesn't matter how much stuff you're carrying you still have to put it down to open the door! 😂

I'm reading that there is a recall already on this car. Has anyone been experiencing issues?

Excuse me, but didn't they have keyless car entry 10 years ago? I had mine in my 2009 Toyota Auris.

There is "Dynamics Kids Control" - it's called "education".

Why not choose a pure electric like Tesla model Y or Id.4 or Skoda Enyaq instead (all will soon be available). Then you can go far on pure electric, and do something good by emitting a lot less CO2 and not pollute the air locally sometimes. For instance if you drive on gasoline/diesel in citys, people in the citys being next to you when driving, has to breathe the harmful exhaust smoke from your car. Plus the BMW X5 Hybrid 45e weighs 2, 435 kg, Tesla model Y Long range weighs 2, 003 kg, which is helping the model Y be more environmental friendly.

What is the environmental and health impact of producing the battery and disposing of it at the end of its useful life? We need regs for this (and batteries of all kinds), as I suspect the environmental benefit marketing is pure nonsense.
