If he actually managed to settle the Taylor Ham/Pork Roll debate, he'd have actually done something to earn his Nobel Peace Prize.

Since you did not identify whether this speech was at Rutgets New Brunswick or Camden, it's hard to say how locals refer to the product. Plus, New Brunswick is on the border of where lthe locals' name for it changes ("Taylor Ham to the north, "Pork Roll" to the south). And, as is obvious by other comments, some will forcably argue for one name, some for the othe one.

But, in fact, there's no doubt as to which name is legal: According the the 1906 Pure Food & Drug law the product does not meet the definition of ham. That's why the originating company itself, Taylor Provisions (located in Trenton, and mfr of the Taylor & Trenton brands), had to change the name to "Pork Roll".

But, since Taylor was not allowed to trademark "pork roll" for their sole use, multiple companies use that product name (Case is another good brand which some say beats Taylor & also located in Trenton, Then there's Hatfield with its flavorless soddy product, and the less know well know mfrs like like Mercer Meats, Thumanns & Kohler Provisions and probably some smaller artisimal sausage makers.) Other than Hatfield, most of these makers pride themselves on their tasty product though, of course, they do vary somewhat in terms of flavor nuances.

It is apparently just force of habit that those from North Jersey still refer to the product as "Taylor Ham"", close to 120 years since that was outlawed...As noted, everyone from South Jersey to "Philly" calls it "pork roll"
