Nobody can put sounds together like Jeff Lynne. I love every one of ELO’s songs and could listen to them all day long.

Quite an early ELO tune… love the super funky bass line. Still one of ELO’s top songs almost 50 years later and a standard in their live gigs.

In 1973 I was listening to a radio interview with John Lennon and the interviewer asked John what current music he was listening to...John mentioned this song (Showdown). I went out and bought the record the very next day and have been a Huge E.L.O. fan ever since

Without a doubt ELO is quite possibly one of the three greatest bands of the 1970s. I absolutely love that I grew up just absolutely cranking their music as a kid

This particular recording is from "Mr Blue Sky, The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra" from 2012, where Jeff re-recorded all of their greatest hits ALL BY HIMSELF. He played all the instruments, did all the backing vocals, producing (as always) and mixing in his own home studio. It sounds amazing, but I actually prefer the original from the album "On the Third Day" from 1973. It sounds grittier.
Also, a lot of the deeper string parts were done with the cello, not the violin. 😉

ELO has certainly used violins in many of their songs but the star on this song is how they use the cello. Roy Wood started using the cello on their very first album but was gone by the time Showdown was recorded. In Showdown, Mike Edwards played the bass line with a cello in a way no other group was doing at the time. ELO will play the cello like a guitar (strumming or plucking) or like a cello to get the sound Jeff wants to hear. Well done!

I’m sure Jeff Lynne can make music out of anything. My Mum introduced me to ELO and I have loved it since being so very young Mr Blue Sky being the first to peak my interest, I even have ELO’s greatest hits saved on my Apple Music along with so many others my parents introduced me too in my in car music education. I have so much to thank them for because I’ve gotten to always have this phenomenal music in my life although I was only born in the late 90s. I’m so thankful for reactors like you because I feel like I get to hear them for the first time all over again through your ears.

Can't believe you've now reached double digits in ELO reactions! Pretty much all of their discography is instrumental magic. "Showdown" was actually their second charted hit in the US (their first was a cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven"), so you got their early stuff here! For more ELO, you can do "Can't Get It Out of My Head", "Livin' Thing", "Telephone Line", "Turn to Stone", "Shine a Little Love", or "I'm Alive". You just can't go wrong with anything Jeff Lynne has ever done.

Love this song. If you have seen the movie Kingpin and this song ever comes on the radio you will forever remember the bowling final between Munson and Big Ern. Classic battle scene

You guys have evolved into very a sophisticated understanding of music. From when I 1st started watching until now, it is amazing the difference. Try to remember what you thought of music back when you started doing this. How far you have come. As an older man, it gives me hope to see young folks like you able to connect to music from "before your time". Thank you so much for that! ;-0 I was extremely lucky, I had older siblings growing up in the 60's and 70's, so I was around a lot of music during my youth. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Again, thanks for what you do.

One of their best songs is All Over the World. The only video I've seen with the song is different flash mobs dancing to it. You guys would love it!

Electric Light Orchestra was formed in 1970 by the former members of The Move...Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan. Lynne had been a late joiner of The Move, joining about halfway through the band's existence. Roy Wood was one of the founding members of The Move but only stuck in ELO for the first album, before leaving to start his own band, Wizzard. Wizzard is most famous for their 1973 Christmas single, I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday. Bev Bevan remained the drummer for ELO until 1986. ELO still tours under the moniker Jeff Lynne's ELO ( probably to avoid being confused with ELO Part 2, which was the band that Bevan started in 1986 after the dissolution of the original ELO) .

This song meant so much to my mother. The love of her life and the fact that they couldn't be together. It will always remind me of her. She left me way too soon.
Another great one, y'all.
