The big problem with this set (and for most third sets of a block) is that they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for good stuff to print. It's a weak set with only a few really expensive cards. I'm glad they're moving to smaller sets.

Just got back into Magic and I bought a Dragons of Tarkir box along with a 2015 and Fate Reforged box, and you did way better than I did in Dragons of Tarkir, and the other boxes for that matter. I think I got close to $200 in rares for all 3 boxes, so not the best.

Not that I'm really complaining about it. I knew it was a gamble and was going to be a waste, but I wanted a nice big stock pile of cards to jump back into the game with, and its not like I'm going to sell them anyway.

Also, back when I did play, I only got theme decks, so I wanted to see what opening a butt load of boosters was like, and honestly I have no regrets, lol. Opening up a pack to see 2 rares in a single pack, Dragonlord Ojutai, or Ajani Steadfast (my only planewalker...) was pretty cool.

I think Dragons may be the first set that doesn't get there, because it is the first set that will live through 2 rotations. Whenever a rotation happens, some sleepers rise in value because they work well with the new cards and because some old cards that made them not tier 1 rotate out. So far that has only happened once to each set, which means that roughly half the cards that would see T1 standard play would do so around release. With the new rotations there are 3 different standard environments in which the set is legal and I would expect that ratio to drop to a third. We had cards that became good (and expensive) after rotation (Recent memory has a lot of devotion cards there. Nightveil Specter was a 1$ rare before Theros came out, it went up to ~10$ until RTR rotated out for instance).
Because DTK cards have two shots at going from bulk rares to format all-stars, we might be underestimating them right now...

MM2 is selling for under MSRP on ebay a few places. Obviously the concern would be if you can buy another box at MSRP after selling off the rares or what-have-you. I think you could still reasonably buy two or more boxes as an investment and just open one to see if you can cover the costs of the others. If not, just save the boxes and resell later.
