Winter Bivvi Setup | Snugpak | Thermarest | etc.

Wild camping in February can be pretty cold at night regardless of the day time temperature. This February I camped out in Hertfordshire for the night in a Snugpak Stratosphere Bivvi.
I wanted to show the Bivvi setup at the time but arrived at my chosen spot too late to video it all so today I set up the same gear and explain how it all works together to give me a really warm and comfortable nights sleep.

Winter Bivvi Setup | Snugpak | Thermarest | etc.

The new items I have for the recent outing are the Thermarest NeoAir X-Therm air mattress (large size), the Neoair mini air pump and the Toparchery 1000g duck down sleeping bag.
This setup is described as good for 3 to 4 seasons. In the UK a bag with a rating down to minus 10 celsius is more than enough for all year round.

I hope you enjoy watching my vlogs. Also check out my website at:

I ride an adapted HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS26 trike.
My panniers and sidebags are made by Ortlieb.
I film using a Canon G7X MkII, GoPro Hero 6 and a DJI Spark Drone. I also occasionally use my Galaxy S9 phone to record some footage but prefer not to if I can help it.

That looks cozy! Thanks for showing it all being stowed. The hardest part usually is rolling it up and stuffing it all back into those tiny bags. But you don't seem to have any trouble. Unbelievable for Seattle, but it snowed here again night before last. Still just trike dreaming.

Great information, thanks. Any chance of a clothing kit video? Normal cycling gear doesn’t seem very comfy so I’d love to know what you’ve found works especially as you’re another tall bloke.

It will be 1 degree overnight tonight. It got up to about 8 and the snow is melting. I might use that bag as a two season bag here. Went up in the mountains for some winter camping a few years ago and it snowed about a foot of heavy wet stuff overnight and the tent was sealed in pretty good the water accumulated inside the tent and the down bag was useless but I had a spare artificial bag so all was good. The kids loved it. Now the cold gets in my joints a bit. I don't think I'll try camping and biking much. But as my son says Good on you. Keep up the good play!!

A really good video - again. Thanks. And also a really useful video. I ended up ordering that featured Neoair Mini Pump for my Thermarest pad.

Another really good video Tim ... I see that you have changed your intro ... a bit more sublime this time, all good. I even learned a few things about camping.

Well done, nice gear. I actually just ordered a bivy because of this video, looks good rather than my one man tent for touring. Thanks for sharing.

Camping equip has really advanced from my time ⛺️. Don’t do it any longer. Very informative, Tim.

I'm not familiar with how bivvys work so this was very helpful. Having just bought a down sleeping bag I'm a bit paranoid about getting it wet. Did you have any issues with condensation on the inside of the bivvy, for example around the leg area where the flysheet inevitably touches the bag inside? Forgive my ignorance but I've never used a bivvy. Cheers Tim fir another great video.

I'm not a bivvy fan, they make me feel claustrophobic - I like a 3 man tent for space or a large 2 man.

Very nice setup.
I use my clothes as pillow and place it under my self inflatable mattress.
The inflatable is big, but is just so great to sleep on. It has a tiny pillow on it, but some clothes make that it works great.
I prefer my inflatable above something you have. I had those things also in the past, but this is better and I prefer to lay good.
That cover is just great. I almost bought an army sleeping bag that has something simular but is all in one.

Picking up the steel for my trike this Monday. Monday I will also cancel my rent on my current home. Than after a month, I will move to my new home. After that I start building my trike. Have to much to do for my new home and as I am finished and moved over, than I have all the time and space to build.
Maybe I come this summer to the UK for a few days to ride my trike.

Cracking setup you have there - I actually can't believe it all fits inside 1 pannier actually. Does that sleeping bag get too hot, or do you change to a thinner one in warmer weather/climates?

Tim- does your thermarest pump do tyres as well?

I like that small air pump, but you did bring up a very good point. If you can get ahold of the manufacturer and ask 2 things. To change their color to a blazed orange or Neo-green so it shows up better than that dull gray. Second is to add some type of a place to hook a rope or something to it so to make it harder to lose at $45 dollars it should be gold. LOL

I'm a bit confused with the Bivvi. You have a nice big sleeping bag which I assume you lay in without clothes on. And get up in the morning, climb out of the bivvi naked, dress and light a fire to get warm :D Or do you keep all your clothes on in the sleeping bag. ?

Tim I love that setup... what would it be like for a year round setup... removing the heavy sleeping bag?then what? I am just curious because I ride a trike and enjoy camping
