This bird must've noticed that whenever your friend's phone rings he directly goes for it, and since the bird saw he was leaving it started singing so your friend pays attention to it instead of the phone.

I used to live over the road from an old lady, I was talking to her one day, she told me how she missed her budgie, it used to talk all the time.
I used to breed birds so I gave her a cockatiel and cage. About a month later she said "I've got a bone to pick with you." She said the bird mimics a phone, I told her I knew one was making a phone noise but I never knew it was that one.
I offered to swap it with another but she turned it down because she had bonded with it.
Fast forward a year, Charlie was talking all day.
