Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the US Congress on Wednesday as he uses the West’s great legislative bodies as a global stage to orchestrate support against Russia’s crushing invasion.
In Zelenskyy’s video address to the U.S. Capitol, the Ukrainian president called for U.S. leaders to cut all financial ties with Russian businesses. "All American ports should be closed for Russian goods. Peace is more important than income," he said.
Ukraine's president also called for the formation of a new union of countries called "U-24" or "United for Peace" which will be a "union of responsible countries that have the strength and consciousness to stop conflicts immediately, provide all the necessary assistance in 24 hours, if necessary weapons, if necessary sanctions, humanitarian support, political support, finances, everything you need to keep the peace and quickly," Zelenskyy said.
Also during Zelenskyy's video address, a line saying "close the sky" flashed on-screen in reference to calls for a no-fly zone to be instituted over Ukraine.
U.S. President Joe Biden has insisted there will be no U.S. troops on the ground in Ukraine and has resisted Zelenskyy’s relentless pleas for warplanes as too risky, potentially escalating into a direct confrontation with nuclear-armed Russia.
