Hello Booktube! April is the TBR Clearout Readathon hosted by Katie @katiejlumsden and it got me thinking ... how many books are on my own physcial TBR? It's hard to say when your library is merged with another's, but I did my best with coming up with a number. I'd love to hear what you think and if you know how many books are on your physical TBR (or e-book TBR)! As always, if you don't feel comfortable leaving a comment, you can leave an emoji or give this video a thumbs up. If you haven't yet, hit the subscribe button!

Umberto Eco had about 50000 books and this is what he said about it:
"It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion."

My StoryGraph says I have 47 owned unread books. However, I didn't add all my books to that account. I think the number is closer to 100.

I have zero physical books on my TBR. I have 250 physical classics for rereading. I have zero ebooks because I don’t buy them. They are all through Libby. I do have three library cards, two of them nonresident. Now for the slightly embarrassing part, I have five ereaders, but I use every one every single day. My husband teases me, asking if I know that they will hold more than one book each. 😊 But if you’re like me and love the Kindle Oasis, you need two, because they don’t make them anymore and it’s only prudent to have a backup. The Kobo Libre Colour was initially bought as an Oasis backup only to discover it’s not as good, but hey, it’s in color, the Kindle Matcha Basic because of portability, fits small hands so well and it’s so stinkin’ cute and finally the Kindle Scribe because of lightweight large screen that has a great stylus that allows for writing on the book text and creating notebooks. Yeah, so my shameful secret is not unread physical books, but an over abundance of ereaders. I never would have guessed that I would come to love them more than physical books, but my poor hands and eyes thank me.

My physical TBR--I call it the "book wall", or now, based on my office, it's more of a "book closet"--is uh... large. I worked at a library in college and managed to get a lot of free books from that, as well as in general being really good at finding cheap books, has made it balloon to 2598. I do intend to read all of them, and I do read about 500 books a year... but we'll see how long that takes me, LOL.

God's nightgown! I'm with Umberto here, my TBR will never end. I mentally added 5 books while watching this video alone. 😂😂😂 Go well, I need to load up Duchess, before i go to bed. 😊

Thanks for a wonderful video! My unread physical TBR is definitely higher than 300 books but it would take me days or maybe years to count them all.. lol! 😃 But I did unhaul 500 plus books at the start of the year and now my bookshelves are not overcrowded which is a wonderful feeling! 😃 Hamnet is one of my favourite of all time books.. masterful, highly recommend.. 📘📗Wishing you happy April reading! Hope you have fun!! 📚🌻

My guess of your TBR is 350 books. I record all the physical books of myself & my husband on LibraryThing and that total is 1, 588, which includes multiple editions of books (like Jane Austen). Like you, all of our many poetry collections are my husband's, as he writes poetry. On LibraryThing I tag which books from our shelves are ones I want to read, and that comes to 456 of the 1, 588 total. So my current TBR is 456.

I have around 280 physical books that I haven't read. And a whole bunch of ebooks. I need to be kind to myself about all the books I've bought over the years that I haven't read

I have 117 unread physical books, 10 unread ebooks, and 6 out from the library. Not to mention to rereads I want to do.

I haven't read Hamnet yet either, so you aren't the only one.

Hey Kelly, Always fun hearing of the division of literature, so to speak, between you and Jason. Definitely enough to-be-reads to keep you occupied for sure. Have no idea what it is here...quite a few, and am such a seat-of-the-pants reader I'm never sure what's going to come next anyway...Happy Monday your way. -Carm & Rocky nearby

I currently have 345 physical books on my TBR - out of my library’s total of 547. Because I am a mood reader - there is no telling when I’ll get around to them. But I really love buying books and supporting authors so I never really stress out about it - though some of my friends think I should. 😂😂😂 I think we both have good numbers to ensure we always have something exciting to read. ❤

I am under one hundred on my TBR as I worked hard to get under 200 a couple of years ago

I have 3 unread physical books and 256 unread ebooks. I’m currently working on getting my unread ebooks down, the goal is to have under a hundred. I read around 200 books a year so it’s not impossible. Like you said, it’s easy to forget about them since they don’t take up space.

I like how Greg from Supposedly Fun calls the TBR a pile of possibilities. My book buying was out of control so that pile is well... towering. I am sure I will never read them all and I have been passing on many books I have already read so the ratio of read vs unread is higher for me. I have a great collection of highly regarded novels to choose from so I am happy to own them! If I do not get to them I have plans for my daughter to donate them to More Than Words in Boston which supports troubled youth. My problem is I keep on hearing about books that people love and I end up buying them instead of making a list of possibilities!!! Good luck with reducing your TBR!

Hi Kelly, this was an interesting video. I have roughly 100 books on my tbr. I used to buy compulsory especially when I found booktube. But now I buy less and more responsible.
Hope you have a great week and happy reading my friend 💛

Hey!! Less than I estimated! That seems pretty reasonable in your size of Library!

I think you could definitely tackle that number! I'm too scared to check mine, lol.

I've no idea how many books are on my physical TBR, both with me now and in my storage unit in Albany. There's another one coming in the mail soon, the first volume of March 1917 (which I'm so long overdue to read!), by my favorite writer, Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn. I've read almost everything he ever wrote, though surprisingly I've not yet done any videos just about him. If you're just getting into him, I wouldn't recommend his Red Wheel saga (August 1914, November 1916, March 1917, April 1917), since it's so intense and trying to do too much at once, and he was kind of out of his league writing historical fiction.

I estimate my TBR shelf to have about 98 books on it. Some of them I am rereading this year though, so that I why they are on there. I only have one shelf of TBR on the bookcases, so if it’s full I don’t buy anything until it has space 😅 Makes me happy to see space open up as I read.

I am actively trying to get into poetry more this year. I just added the ebook 'Letters to a Young Poet' from the library to get me started, plus I have always wanted to read it. I have read Hamnet and loved it, but my book bestie read it and only liked it. It's one of the rare books that we disagree (sort of) on. I forgot that a movie was coming out. I have a very particular vision in my head, so it will be interesting to see how the movie turns out. I loved both the book and the movie of 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring.' I saw it recently at a thrift store with the cover you have and almost purchased, but I already had too many books in my basket so I didn't.

What fun this was to listen to and then read the comments, Kelly.

And how shall I count thee, dear books waiting to be read?

Books I’ve bought since college 104
Books gifted to me as keepers or as a loan: 10
Classic books from my children’s high school and college days that I haven’t read: 7
Books from my school days (1965-1973) that I want to reread: 16

That comes to 137. Part of me loves having this home library and wants it to grow. Part of me is cringing at this indulgence.
