You’re so right about the pacing. Also I found the whimsical element to the writing just made it lack substance as a story rather than making it more magical. Without giving anything away I found the ending really unsatisfying and felt it wasn’t led up to in a way that made sense with a certain character. But the cover is gorgeous so at least it will look beautiful on your shelves!

I agreed completely. The pacing was frustrating, the lack of story building in The Hinterland and all of the scary stories, and the extensive use of alterations drove me crazy. I get what the author was attempting but you can actually say something is something without it being “like something” constantly.

I'm still in the middle of reading it, so my perspective isn't the best. I actually disagree since I think I get what Melissa Albert was trying to do. I loved the slow build because its building the atmosphere. Maybe it's because I'm a total sucker for atmospheric horror. Who knows! But I definitely agree. I don't really like Alice. Definitely going to make a video of my own for this one > <

I just borrowed this book from my library... I only made it about halfway before I GAVE UP. I saw the “twist” coming from a mile away and the author spent waaaayyyy too much time on what turned out to be very insignificant things.

I am very character-focused while I read too. I can read any story so long as I love the characters... and I hate all of them in this book. They were either totally unlikable or completely flat. Like Alice mom? I HATED Alices mom.
