The 46km drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy at the top of Lake Wakatipu is one of NZ's most scenic. It's a good sealed road, though is a little narrow in a couple of places!
There are loads of amazing views of Lake Wakatipu & the surrounding mountains along the way, & many places to take short walks. With stops for photos & walks, plus a lazy lunch on arrival there or a stroll along the Glenorchy Walkway, a day is easily filled.
For longer stays, there's a wide range of accommodation available in Glenorchy, plus camping & campervan sites. Jetboat & kayaking trips on the Dart River depart from here & it's the gateway for one of NZ's Great Walks - the Routeburn Track.
The area is also famous as a backdrop to some very popular fantasy movies & movie location tours can be booked.
