New Zealand South Island | 10 Day Road Trip Itinerary

I travelled the South Island, New Zealand back in August 2019, and its only now (7th April 2021) that I'm finally uploading this video.

Take note, I may look younger in this video as I made the 'talking head' part of the video over a year ago too.

I'm very aware that New Zealand is still a difficult country to enter with its restrictions on entry during the pandemic, but I hope this video will give people planning a trip to New Zealand for the future some ideas.

Great video. I really like the fact that your clip is 100% useful information. Unlike most of the other South Island travelogues, which in large part consist of driving from place to place or, even more annoying, spending time in restaurants. So thanks again.

Great video. Just a small tip from a local - your road-travel times were a bit underestimated. If you were driving a Lambo - yes, okay. In a campervan or an ordinary car, I would recommend adding about an hour to every leg.

Great video. I will plan a trip to the south island in winter 2023. Just my 2 cents for 2:00, the point of night sky is where you have less people, you have better sky. Almost everywhere outside towns and airports in the south island have perfect night sky (grade 1, i.e. no light pollution) so you don't have to worry where to do your astrophotography! Actually the town "Lake Tekapo" itself is grade 2 because of human activities. If you drive a few km outside the town then you get grade 1.

Great video Jimmy. Yes, Tekapo was the least correctly pronounced place name but never mind. For the tourists coming back here after the Covid shutdown, I think your stated travel times between the places shown are too short. If you had a fast car (rather than a campervan), they would be achievable but I would recommend adding at least 20% more time to each leg of the trip. Apart from the scenery, the road conditions and the speed of slower vehicles should be kept in mind. And a flock of sheep on the road can happen.

Planning for a 11 day trip to NZ South Island some time in August and chanced upon your video. In this video, were you just taking 1 night stops most of the time? Also, do you just spend about 3hours per "attraction"?

It'll be our first time in NZ and we were concerned about things being too rushed if we attempt a round trip like yours

Don’t be sorry about the pronunciation! It’s difficult for non Kiwi! And some Kiwi. You tried and didn’t do too bad ! Thank you for trying :) the one thing I would recommend is the top of the South Island. It’s a tropical paradise! :)
