Sarcopenia is age-related muscle loss. Sarcopenia leads to metabolic syndrome, declining health, and early death.

Protein is a macronutrient that, in conjunction with exercise (e.g., resistance training), helps build and preserve muscle to prevent sarcopenia.

Protein in meals helps mitigate glucose spikes because it slows the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream.

Twenty amino acids make up the different types of proteins we consume. Nine are essential proteins, meaning the body can’t make them, and we must get them from food.

Leucine, one of the essential amino acids, stimulates muscle protein synthesis, so it’s necessary for preserving and building muscle.

However, without exercise, leucine stimulates insulin release and contributes to high insulin levels, which can drive fat gain.

Leucine is found in high amounts in milk and corn-fed animal products.

What if I have a neurodegenerative disease (which I do: Bulbar-onset ALS) that results in muscle atrophy, from neurons not communicating with my muscles? I can stretch, but hardly what you'd consider muscle-building exercise.
