DAILY DOSE | US President Donald Trump on Monday authorized sanctions on Turkey's leaders, reimposed steel tariffs and ended trade negotiations to protest Ankara's offensive into Syria.
"I am fully prepared to swiftly destroy Turkey's economy if Turkish leaders continue down this dangerous and destructive path," he wrote on Twitter.
Sanctions were placed on Turkey's defense and energy ministries as well as Ankara's ministers of defense, energy, and interior, the US Treasury said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence said he would be urgently traveling to Turkey at the president's request.
According to Pence, the President Trump urged his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call to "stop the invasion" of Syria.
Trump pressed the Turkish leader in a telephone call to "stop the invasion, to enact an immediate ceasefire and to begin negotiations with Kurdish forces in Syria," Pence told reporters, adding that he would be traveling urgently to Turkey at the president's request.
"He's directed me to lead a delegation. I will be leaving as quickly as possible to travel into the region to pursue a ceasefire and negotiated settlement," Pence said.
Also on Monday, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he would ask NATO allies to punish Turkey for its invasion of northeast Syria, accusing Ankara of causing the release of dangerous Islamic State detainees.
"This unacceptable incursion has also undermined the successful multinational 'Defeat ISIS' mission in Syria, and resulted in the release of many dangerous ISIS detainees," Esper said in a statement.
Esper said he would travel to NATO headquarters in Brussels next week to ask allies "to take collective and individual diplomatic and economic measures in response to these egregious Turkish actions."
Trump has given orders to pull all US troops from northern Syria -- about 1,000 soldiers -- as Turkey presses a deadly assault against Kurdish forces there.
