Why Gengar didn't use Ghost moves #shorts

Gengar didn't always use Ghost moves, this is due to how Physical / Special stats worked in Generation II, forcing unique movesets that Sucker Punch Gengar would be proud to encounter. Enjoy the great original art.

The old Gengar sprite look so menacing holy

That reminds me of when a common Alakazam set was Psychic + the three elemental Punches. Crazy times.

My boy really had a glow down from that old sprite (wish he kept that menacing look and color 😢)

Heres a really weird detail about the physical special split: despite the fact that dark used to be a special type, there is not a single dark type move that stayed a special move after the split. All special dark attacks were introduced in gen 4 or after.

I was OBSESSED with Gengar as a kid lmao the GBC graphics make this for me lol

The physical special split was the best thing that ever happened to Pokemon. Other Pokemon like Gyarados and Absol felt the same pain for being unable to properly use their higher attack stat in tangent with an STAB.

I always wondered why I was surprised that shadow ball was special, cause I was used to it being physical. Makes so much sense now

i'm still stunned they made ghost a physical type in gen 1 when LITERALLY THE ONLY GHOST TYPE IN THE ENTIRE GAME WAS A SPECIAL ATTACKER.

Honestly gen 3 Gengar was a nightmare. Because it didn't really use STAB, it was harder to predict since it had a wide array of special moves to choose from. It has insane coverage because of this fact too.

The Gen 2 Gengar sprite in my opinion will forever be the greatest sprite of any Pokemon. You can tell so much about this Pokemon from just this sprite.

I like all the different gen sprites used throughout the short. Very fun visual style. More of this, please

Funny how many mon didn't have good stab moves before the split, yet could still be competitively viable

we all love the old gengar sprite, absolute peak. black and dark purple go so much harder than the lavender color

Just wanted to say you've been absolutely killing it with these shorts! Keep 'em coming!

These are the best Pokémon shorts, Joey. Best use of sounds and games sprites to give information about competitive. Hope you do more 🔥

With how many special-leaning Ghost-types and physical-leaning Dark-types they had in the first three generations, the decision to make Ghost physical and Dark special is BAFFLING

It’s amazing how many oversights there were in past gens, that surprisingly took so long to address.

Shoutouts to people on the ADV ladder using focus punch taunt Gengar to do half to Blissey and prevent it from just healing it off. It doesn't even take any attack investment to do 40% because ADV Blissey doesn't run much HP investment, but Will-o-Wisp is still probably a lot more consistent.

Gengar has always been a menace. It is basically a shadow that trolls its enemy.

Seriously, I really love this channel and videos, now with analysis of old generation meta.
This Gengar effect also applies to Sneasel and Kingler
