Fun facts: Marx’s quote about religion being an opiate is often read out of context. It was more touching on the role of religion among the poor as a means of soothing their conditions. It’s more complicated than simply “religion is toxic.” In Marx’s observation religion among the poor workers is a painkiller, though an addictive one, which sets it apart from the role of religion among the wealthy and powerful. Whether the Soviet Union misinterpreted the statement is another story, though at the time the church and the tsar were linked in a similar way to the church and the British empire, so the Soviets may have had reasons to interpret Marx the way they did. History is complicated, especially revolutionary history.

Also the earliest socialists were actually a Christian sect calling themselves “the diggers.” Their social model was the apostles in the book of Acts holding everything in common amongst themselves. Marx more or less focused an already existing religiously-rooted philosophy to an historical labor-focused lens. So Western Christianity’s disdain for communism is not only bizarre but also objectively unbiblical. And before anyone argues, I have more than a decade of biblical studies under my belt. This is an area I know a lot about.

Tl;dr: God forbid a worker should seize the means of production 🤷

Americans all have such strange politics against humanity while deeming themselves the best of the world.

Ironically the “Ten Commandments of Citizenship” are arguably good advice, at least taken in a vacuum and not with the bias implied by its context. Keep up on world events, examine what your politicians do, consider the biases of your sources and vote.

I hurt myself laughing at the "But if you want to support capitalism..." joke. Totally worth it! Well played.
I've seen samples of this book before and am always surprised at how solid the art is. Thank you!

I hope no offense is taken, but because your voice is so smooth and relaxing that I thought it was AI. The chuckle after your mispronunciation cleared the air on that 😅

With regard to the success of "This is Tomorrow" in defeating communism, the work of historians like Alex Carey suggest that communism was never the real target, but that industrial capitalism sought to defuse (with staggering budgets allotted to printed matter, films, radio etc) the threat of worker-based input to manufacturing decision making and investment.

As a side note, when specifying the Red Scare, it's important to specify which Red Scare: the one associated with the Palmer Raids after WW1, or the one associated with McCarthy? Again Carey is a good guide for the red scare's longevity and evolution.

5:30 This is generally very rich given the comic book panic of the late 40's and 50's did in fact involve several mass comic book burnings propagated by religious institutions, usually at schools.

Shades of Orson Welles, the "in character" bits were eerily effective.

I see (on Wikipedia) that "...The comic book includes some of the first published comic drawings by Minneapolis-born Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts."
