One thing to keep in mind about police sketches is that sometimes they are drawn a bit exaggerated on purpose. For example if a witness didn't get a good look at the suspect, but they remember certain key features, those features are exaggerated so they stick in people's mind. So for example if the guy had a crooked nose or a particularly shaped face, they might exaggerate that so that detail sticks with you and makes it easier to remember if you happen to see someone who looks similar.

Missing persons photos and police sketches are supposed to be slightly creepy/off putting so they stick in your mind better, and as Panqueque (another commenter) mentioned, certain details are exaggerated to make them more noticeable in somebodies mind, and more memorable.

I've seen the "joana lopez" sketch before and it used to scare the shit out of me, something about not being able to identify her eyes or any clear facial features. the reconstruction of what she might have actually looked like really really helped. thanks for putting a real face to the image. she deserves that much.

mr cruel is terrifying to me because i live so close to his victims. i could be walking past him daily and have no idea.

I think mr cruel ended up killing the last girl because she might have accidentally seen his face and he didnt want to be caught

Police sketches are always like the BIGGEST real life jumpscares to me.

The Mr. Cruel case is an odd one you have a sudden change in the pattern, and the fact there is also no other known cases of him after the third. The reason why we catch most killers is because they simple can't stop which says a lot about the person behind Mr. Cruel.

One disturbing sketch that I will always remember is the Jenny Gamez one: she was found murdered and her body placed in a suitcase, and the police published a sketch that looked nothing like her (some commented that she looked like an alien). However, the sketch deliberately accentuated her most prominent features: her sharp chin and chipmunk-like cheeks. And it worked; her foster mother recognised and identified her.

Other disturbing sketches include:
- Septic Tank Sam (before he was identified as Gordon Sanderson)
- Baton Rouge killer (before he was identified as Derrick Todd Lee)
- The suspect woman involved in Zeb Quinn's disappearance

My grandma was born in 46'. She said during the late night hours, news stations used to post police sketches. She said she used to be scared since they were so terrifying. Now, I see why....

it’s more disturbing that someone can do that to MULTIPLE kids and only get 30 years.

The thing about the photo of Joanna Lopez is that it's actually quite a cute photo once you're able to make out her glasses, nose, and mouth. It's the size and quality that made it seem so unnerving on TV; in black and white, with the shine on her lenses, it looks like an unnaturally shadowed face with glaringly bright eyes (like when light reflects off an animals' pupils) or really large eyelids with more dramatic, unnatural lighting on them, illuding to warped, dark, and hollow eyes underneath. I wish they would've had some sort of defining tool for photos back then, but I don't think people quite understood how more contrast in greyscale values would make it so much easier to see smaller sized images.

when i was younger i was terrified of composite sketches & would be like “how tf am i supposed to know who that is” but later on i learned that they are just all features put together. they aren’t supposed to resemble the person, but make you remember eyes, nose, mouth shape, etc. if they have any moles or tattoos that’s even better.

there’s a video about a missing girl on yt (i forgot her name) and in the thumbnail her composite sketch was placed side by side with her real picture. even though the drawing doesn’t look like her at first glance, the features are exactly the same and if you look at both pictures for more than a minute they start to look alike.

waking up to some fuzzy sounding low quality recording of the national anthem is scarier than waking up to any adult swim bumper

The police sketch for Richard Ramirez was honestly one of the most eerie police sketches I have ever seen. Considering the cases of what he was doing to people at random, and seeing that face which was only a rough estimate of what he looked like, made it even more scary. You instantly seen that there was something truly sinister sitting behind those eyes

its actually done this way on purpose, people easily remember things that frighten them, I promise im not making any of that up, some dude did an ama on reddit a long time ago and he was a retired investigator. A composite that actually looks realistic and human would look just like anyone else and because of that they would have trouble recollecting what they could have potentially seen, its also the reason why the composites that are made out of clay etc dont look as realistic as they could.
