2016 BMW X1 xDrive 20d Review - Inside Lane

The all new 2016 BMW X1 represents a marked improvement over its predecessor. More stylish and designed inline with the rest of the BMW range, the 2016 BMW X1 is practical with a large 505 litre boot. Out test car is the X1 xDrive Sport with all wheel drive and a 188 BHP 2.0 litre diesel engine.

Can this luxury SUV compete with some tough competition?

First class review, hope changing from our present x1 is going to be the quantum leap as regards to the handling and lighter steering on this new model.

Excellent detailed review. I test drove a 2018 and I really like it a lot.

I can only agree with this review - We have this model 20d Xdrive Sport as a daily driver for my wife and our children 5 and 9 - and there is plenty of space in the back and it’s easy to park and use in the city - and like the reviewer says - put it in sport and it’s quite fun to drive. People need to know that this model is based on a front wheeler platform and drives more like a Audi compared to other BMW’s - but that’s okay - it’s a great small SUV that’s bigger inside than people think 👍

Great short to the point review. Two questions. 1) Is this standard black exterior color or sapphire black? 2) is the seats sensatec leather (not real leather) or real animal leather?

It has been my observation that reviewers who talk about the actual handling tend to like it and the one's who talk about the X1 being front wheel drive based dis the handling without going into any detail about what is wrong with it. Having owned two front wheel drive MINIs that handled as well as any of my BMWs, I don't share that prejudice against FWD and appreciate objective evaluations of the car rather than criticisms of the company that designed it.

Great review, like your style, straight to the point on real day to day driving. One question I have is whether the entry level sdrive 118d is likely to handle any differently on the road compared to the car you drove. I do a lot of motorway miles, how would you compare living day to day with the X1 to my 320d tourer. Am I going to miss the 3 series if I opt for the X1?

Just ordered the 25d x line. Was going to get Msport but no free leathers? I got Xline which has free leathers and better alloys imo. Noce review, thanks a lot.

Not sure about the handling comments, you have contradicted, most other reports on this car.  The original BMW X1 was built on the 3 series touring platform, which when I drove it, felt like a BMW.  This new one I felt drove like a Ford Escape.  It is though a great improvement over the old car, which I was never sure of its purpose, estate or crossover.  The 2.0T gas engine also felt stronger in the old car.

Good in depth review. But there's nothing wrong with commentating a vehicle in a stop position. There's something annoying and disturbing to see someone concentrating on both the road and explaining something. Perfectly ok though when explaining driving experience

Bmw make good cars. The only cars I don't like are any of them that start with X

Detailed review? Don't think so, say to people how much final price with " basic "optional...., optional that u need and come to other cars as standard Almost 50k euros a decent x1

And because is a front drive car it's harsh to drive. It has lost all the nimbleness it had before. And lose all the mechanical finesse it had. The BMW spend so much time and money to make a front wheel drive car behave like a rear drive. The thing is that they almost done it.

This isn't a true BMW, cos it's in base a front wheel drive...
