Friends,

This is a Maths video. This is the eleventh webisode (Webisode-11) of Series-1 on Numbers, numbers and more numbers. This webisode teachs us how to find out square root of any real number - rational or irrational - using geometry. This webisode has two parts. This is part-2. In this video, we prove why the steps - outlined in part-1 - correctly give us the square root of the real number.

In part-1, we learnt the steps (process) as to how to find out the square roots of any number geometrically. We take two examples and go over these steps.

This video is suited for class-9 (Class-IX) or grade-9 kids.

Cheers,

I was struggling with this problem only because I never noticed that OD is the radius but this video helped me by a mile (even more than my school teacher who do not even cares about proves).

Hi Deepanshu,
That's by construction. Please watch from 8:30 of the previous video. We have drawn a semi-circle with O as center and OA as radius. So, OA = OD = radius. Hope this helps!
Cheers,

Wooow! This is awesome! If you are out in the wilderness and have no access to electronic devices you can always find a way to actually measure the sqrt of a number. I am sure this will come in handy some day. Thank you!

I discovered an alternative method if the line x is more than 1 unit in length. You draw a circle with line x as its diameter. Then measure 1 unit in from either end of line x and mark the spot. Draw a line up perpendicular from line x from that spot to intersect the perimeter of the circle. Finally, draw a line from that intersection point to the end of line x where you measured 1 unit in from. That angled line will be the square root of line x, not the perpendicular line as in the method in the video. Maybe someone already discovered this method, I've only ever seen the one in the video though so it may be new. The square root line is the hypotenuse of a triangle in this new method.

Descartes describes it but I think he probably 'borrowed' it from India rather than discovered it. I may be wrong. Regardless it is very beautiful.

For getting OB i did AB minus OA. Which is x minus (x plus 1 ÷by 2). But didn't get what you got. Why
