Why Rotten Black Teeth Were Beautiful

Why were rotten teeth once seen as beautiful?

During mediaeval times, most people in Europe had surprisingly good teeth. This was largely because sugar had not been discovered yet. However this all changed during Tudor times. Initially though, sugar was a delicacy that only the richest could afford. Queen Elizabeth was said to be very fond of the stuff and it rotted her teeth terribly. However, rather than putting people off sugar, it simply encouraged it's use. Many hoped that by consuming sugar, they too could have rotten black teeth, which was now regarded as a status symbol. As a result, blackening ones teeth became quite fashionable during this period.

Imagine living in an era where having black teeth makes you look like you’re rich

One critic, I'm sure it was a wealth and status symbol, however I'm sure no one thought seeing someone with rotting teeth was beautiful. Obviously you were thought after because of your wealth but beauty would be a false pretense.
