Heavy downpours began, Friday, November 22, in West Pokot County, which borders Uganda. Conditions worsened overnight, causing flooding and mudslides on Saturday, November 23, which swept away four bridges and left villages inaccessible by road.
Fifty-six people were confirmed dead and an unknown number were missing, according to an official from West Pokot County.
More than 1 million people in East Africa have been adversely affected recently by higher-than-normal rainfall.
Torrential rains are uncommon in the region at this time of year, but experts point to changing weather patterns — including an unusually powerful phenomenon in the Indian Ocean. (VOA/Reuters)
