The HMS Challenger embarked in the 1870s to survey the world’s oceans. The data the expedition collected is still being used over 100 years later to inform what we know about climate change.

The fact that the navies of various countries have been sailing around the world, and every four hours writing down position, weather, wind, temperature and pressure for several centuries, have provided the field of climate science and meteorology with a treasure trove af data.

_"That does not mean the situation is hopeless, though."_
Yes, Hank! It's absolutely crucial to pair this message to news about the climate crisis. Because we cannot afford to lose all hope and give up. Future generations are depending on us in the here and meow.

Very interesting video! And thank you, Hank, for saying that the situation isn't hopeless.

And here i was thinking the technology was a return to sailing vessels and doing away with ships that use diesel engines to carry cargo around the world.

Super cool- does anyone know if this data is publicly available or already online somewhere?

Funny enough I used HMS Challenger data in a unpublished research paper for an undergraduate englist classs

Would humans drain on water resources also be contributing to the changes in salty/fresh water?

I'm thinking of how humans end up diverting water and changing natural aquifers. If we're constantly using up and filtering fresh water, does it even get a chance to become precipitation that would impact ocean salinity?

I'm sure this question is dumb. I just want someone to explain it to me like I'm five.

I have a question. In Star Wars they use the Death Star and other versions of it to destroy planets. What happens to the other planets/moons? Wouldn’t their positions change?

My mistake was having a child. It’s bad enough that I have to deal with global warming but I especially fear for future generations. I do what I can but I feel helpless.

The one thing that can be said is that it will be difficult to convince everyone to change their way of living, if that is the only solution to climate change

1:46 temperature and density are two contributors to salinity*
