Small update on UNECE regulations

While the UNECE have met in December 2020, the results of this meeting are still not published, even 2 months after the meeting. On the other hand, my sources have been silenced with extreme NDAs, just at the point where our actions were starting to put pressure on the committee.

I'm currently looking for other ways to keep the pressure on and you can continue to help by contacting your local minister of transport, as I am already doing in Belgium, and put pressure on them to bring our discontent to the European commission and via that way to the UNECE GRVA committee.

As always, as soon as I hear something interesting, I will report it in plain English, so you guys don't have to sift through these complex interwoven documents and proposals that sometimes take hours of even days to fully understand.

It’s positive that they try to find a way to allow the car to follow the curves even in higher speeds but I think they do it with wrong approach. Problem is constant lateral g-limit without consideration to driving conditions.
At my place I have very narrow 270 degrees curve that lead to on-ramp to motorway. At the curve speed limit is the same as on motorway- 120km/h. We don’t want our cars to speed up to this limit on the curve and it can happen that some manufacturer develops a system that is driving with max speed limit with no consideration. So some lateral g-limit is in some way necessary. But it should be adaptive to driving conditions. On this ramp my model s during summer is slower then lorries. During winter the speed is ok. I think g-force allowance should be ~0, 5 g with dry and warm weather, 0, 4 g wet and warm and 0, 3 g cold weather (temp below 4 degrees Celsius). At Tesla cars AP-unit look after signs of water on the road, other cars can use data from rain sensors, all cars has thermometers so this kind of rules should be easy to incorporate for all manufacturers.

Thanks for providing insight on the latest developments (if one can call it that - standstill might be more appropriate 🙄)
I wish there was a way to find out who the respective country's representative on the working group is so we could contact them. But it seems that this is a very secretive society and getting proper information is nigh on impossible.

I noticed that FSD is much better at curvy roads than autopilot.
Once FSD comes to Belgium, I will be looking forward to your tests.

Thanks for the update. Question; have the UNECE had any statements on how they see the path to level 4-5 autonomous cars ? Do they recognize or agree that self driven cars are the future and that the technology are not that fare away. Or do they think this should not be a part of the future and therefore they only will open slowly up for a level 3+ autonomy. There must be a reason for them to work so slowly and almost against the technology that are here today and the technology all big auto knows are around the corner. Many people said a time back that big lobbyists from German cars manufacturers was working in the shadows too hold the regulations back because they did not have the technology themselves and therefore wouldn’t see Tesla get the ok from regulators before they had the same or better technology. Today almost every car manufacturer from Germany have cars that can do pretty much the same as a Tesla on the highway. Including lane change without driver input. So I don’t think this argument of these lobbyists are valid at this point. Then there are only the regulators that have something too gain holding the technology back. Have they ever said anything to explain the slow progress?
