Sorry for the audio issue.. something must have happened during the recording process. Hopefully it’s still audible though!

SHOULD you buy a Pi in 2022???

No, the question is more like “CAN you buy a Pi”??

The Pi 400 ( Pi 4 in a keyboard) seems to be the most cost effective Pi 4 right now. Long term Pis may save money for 7/24 operation. a couple 100 watt light bulbs jumped my bill $50 a month when left on 7/24. The Pi 400 also comes with the Latest Pi 4 CPU running at 1.8 GHz instead of 1.5, stock. Good luck folks

I was going to buy another pi4 and saw the prices at over 100. So I bought a brand new Asus e410MA laptop for 100 bucks. So now I have a low power computer with a screen, keybaord, ram, emmc for the same price as a pi4.

It’s getting harder and harder to justify buying Regular pi 4.

For a project board the requires Custom programming and GPIO I would still buy one. But for a low cost desk computer (not for games) I would buy a low end Ryzen Laptop.

At this rate the Raspberry Pi will price itself out of range for most home users. A pi 5 would have to be targeted for commercial customers that could afford to buy them.

I bought the Raspberry Pi 4 4GB and it is really cool, there is a 8GB version out there too so I'm not sure if I'm missing too much performance. The 4GB was the only one in stock and I bought the kit for 120 euros

depends what you would like to do with it. Raspberry pi can run 24/7 without noise with Debian type of os connected to wif/ethernet plus you have gpio pins and usb. many projects possible

Regarding pi5, I don’t think so they gonna release it any time soon, iirc eben upton said that their current priority is fixing out supply chain issues of the pi4, and then they gonna release the pi4A aswell, the reason that they didn’t released the pi4A was because their current supply couldn’t even satisfy the current pis demand, so they stopped working on the pi4A, so if I have to guess, the pi5 project took the backseat, but I for sure would love if pi foundation gave us all a surprise and released a pi5 soon

The current situation really sucks, I bit the bullet and ordered a pi for twice the MSRP, unfortunately I had no choice cuz nothing comes close to the niche the pi fits in, I use my pi as a portable desktop solution since I can just chuck it in my backpack and ssh or VNC into it using my iPad, which makes it a pretty small portable laptopish device, so even twice the MSRP is still better deal than the X86 pcs in pi’s form factor which cost 4-5 times as much, and support for other arm SBC is nowhere near as much as pi has

Edit: here in my country, the pi400 are selling at even higher price than pi4, so that’s out of question aswell

The situation is awful :(
I'd say the Pi 400 has a better value now
If you need it for embedded applications and stuff and aren't interested in a Compute Module, I'd ask you to get a 3B or 3B+ whichever is in stock.

In my opinion: If you want a PI, wait for the prices to come down. By the time you buy a cheap PC and more add-ons, you'll regret your decision. In the end, it's all about the form factor and what your using it for—including just playing around with it.

Went again today to Raspberry PI store UK, Cambridge, since I had to go to that part of town anyway. I plied further and they say their manufacturing is now up to 50, 000 units a day but the Raspberry Pi 3B+ (£33) and and CM4 (£?) face shortages since they are in the most demand by commercial and industrial clients which order in bulk and they still have these orders to fufill. They said 50K may seem alot but they have a back log of bulk orders to get out. The RPi Zero2WH (£13.50) was out of stock but you can still buy all the 4 models (£33 - 1Gb, £40 - 2Gb, £53 - 4Gb, £73 - 8Gb) and the 400 (£65 - unit only) from the shop. They said nothing about a Pi5 though. They said things should start to rectify soon...meaning about first Q of 2023 to be back to 'normal', probably. Bought a Zero (£5) and a ZeroW (£9.50). Still limited to one model of each per customer - maybe they will limit to one RPi ONLY per customer soon? Ho hum.

6:20 "You're probably not buying this just to play DOOM."
No, I'm buying this to play VIDEOBALL. _Someone_ has to see if it's possible.

At that price most used phones are not only cheaper but more powerful as well. I put ubuntu on my old poco f1 and it easily runs modded minecraft, avorion or factorio servers. A simply hub and you can use it for most projects. An old poco f1 for example has 6 gigs of ram and has around 2 and a half times the compute power of a raspberry pi 4. You also get a battery and a screen in addition all for 70-80 bucks on ebay.

Back when it was 35 bucks and had a very low power consumption I could still understand its use but now I find it honestly underwhelming. An Atmega microprocessor or Adriano board is many times more efficient and computewise enough for the majority of projects with a pricetag of only 10 to 20€. And if you actually need something more powerful an old phone will generally give you alot more for the money and you won’t contribute to more e-waste by reusing an old phone which might otherwise just gather dust.

I'd been using Arduino UNO microcontroller development boards since about August 2021. Due to the complexity of some of my projects I came to realize I needed more options and wanted to expand my interests to using microprocessors. In March 2022, I began looking into using the Raspberry Pi 4 because of all the great reviews and coverage these boards were getting on the web. My research revealed a staggering price increase of more than 500% in only a few months. I quickly changed my mind about moving on to microprocessors such as the Raspberry Pi 4. This is unfortunate, because there are tons of project ideas for the Raspberry Pi 4 on YouTube. However, most of those videos were made when the price of a Raspberry Pi 4 was between 35$ and 45$! How much more will people have to pay for a Pi 5? Have computer prices increased significantly since the pandemic? What about other electronic products such as Arduino microcontroller development boards? No. So, what makes the Raspberry Pi so special that its distributors can justify their absurd price increases? Didn't the pandemic also affect the manufacturers of microcontroller or computer chips? It's said that the Raspberry Pi 400 can deliver as much as the Pi 4, and that the only real significant difference between the two is their form factor. The Raspberry Pi 4 is more compact, but at its current price I have to agree that it's not worth buying it until the prices come down significantly.

You can buy a laptop under 200. Am I missing something

It's basically like buying an old quad core 32 bit computer limited to 4gb RAM with no 3D video card option, that can't run Windows 7. But you can run Manjaro and Firefox and that's about it. I decided instead to upgrade four Dell Optiplex Core2Duo miniPCs to Q6600's and 4gb RAM and SSD drives. So I can run pirated Windows 7 on about the same level hardware. Luckily I did everything before Covid.

As someone who's tried so many Linux distros going back to the 386, I can tell you, almost all of them and their apps swwwk. Even if you're not a linux hater, you got to admit, life on a Linux Desktop is pretty absymal. Its a great system for a server or webserver, but not a deskop. Yes, you can use it as a desktop. KDE, Enlightment, Gnome, nICE, whatever you want, but next to a Windows 7 machine, or a Mac, yeah, you're going to jump shit anywhere else but Linux and flee back to Windows or Mac.
