No matter how safely one drives, there are those who are always reckless, regardless of the road conditions.

I drove I-55 for years commuting back and forth to work. I can honestly say that this was not totally due to fog/weather conditions. This was due to irresponsible drivers who literally have no regard for other people’s lives or safety. There would be times when the fog would be so heavy at 4am-5am in the morning where I couldn’t see past the hood of my car and had to go 25-30 miles per hour there would be other drivers still flying past me going 80+ miles per hour. That was really scary! It literally got to the point where I would let my employer know that I was going to be late because I refused to be on the road with people putting my life in danger😤

Blame the "fog" all you like. I blame the people driving the cars. You know, the one's who actually had some sense of control in the situation.

No it’s tailgating and improper following distance and speed that caused it

I truly want to know why DOT didn't shut down the interstate. Instead, they posted on Twitter telling drivers to TAKE the interstate because another causeway was closed. I'm in FL, and we've had I-10 shut down due to wildfires before. It's inconvenient, but it saves lives!

Fog did not cause this, stupid drivers carelessly caused this. Why would anyone drive more than 10 miles per hour under such conditions.

That lady said that they heard crashes for 30 minutes!!! That's crazy. But I'm sure it's accurate considering 150 cars!

I see this possibility every morning, people on the phone and in a hurry for nothing. I've noticed that they can't stand to be behind someone. They ride your bumper at 70+ mph, even the cops do this and they are supposed to lead by example. Slow Down! Bring the 55 mph limit back and you will see far less accidents. Also, enforce the cell phone laws, the ones that literally everyone ignores. This is what happens when you have a lawless society.

Remember…never trust all your fellow drivers to exercise caution when there is a clear hazard. No doubt a combo of a lack of road closures and people insisting on driving normally till it’s too late

Not the DOT fault that people cant use their own brains to SLOW down and get in the slow lane when the fog is that bad. If I could take a guess it was someone driving 30mph in the fast lane and a person running late for work drove up on them going 90mph.This generation wakes up at the last minute to go to work driving 90mph so they can try to make it on time.

Terrible site no way I would be out driving in that super fog. Also people tend to drive to fast in poor conditions

“Gee, I can’t see through the fog, I’m gonna keep doing 60.”

I could understand something like this if there were icy conditions, but how do that many people keep piling up over such a long period of time just because of fog? Are they all driving 60 and then just hitting a wall of cars out of nowhere? In those conditions you should be driving a fraction of your normal speed to avoid things like that, clearly people were not driving responsibly at all.

Why would anyone go freeway speeds with such low visibility? Unless it just blew in why wouldnt they slow down?

No one takes their time anymore. Everyone is always in a rush and it is ridiculous. Create some extra time to get to where you need to be. I always leave 30 minutes or so earlier before work or something scheduled incase something is happening on the route i'm taking.

Fog does not fall under the "act of god" clause, no insurance company will defend this. Driving through fog is the drivers responsibility, wich means you are liable for anything that happens. No one deserves to die over an accident, but if people are willing to learn, and take accountability... there's a possibility for safer roads in the future.

And no... you cant just shut roads down for fog. Especially if its one of only a few roads going that particular direction.. smh. Just be RESPONSIBLE.

First, I am sad about the people who lost their lives. Second, ALL surviving drivers should have their licenses need much better driver training before they hit the road again.

People just refuse to adjust driving for the conditions. Oblivion is the other factor.

Why drive at high speed in thick fog? These people were asking for it.

Drivers need to adjust their speed to weather conditions and visibility, but never stopping. Of course, entering suddenly into a cloud should be frightening.
