Marquetry at home

Teaching marquetry to my daughters during our coronavirus confinement.

We used stack cutting (Boulle method) to produce several skins from one stack.

Techniques are all similar to what we teach at school, except:

- we had no paper veneer tape, so used plastic packing tape during pressing. This works for cold pressing but removing the tape can really rip up wood fibers so it has to be done slowly and carefully.

- no hot press, so we used a simple home pressing setup. Multiple layers of melamine help distribute clamping pressure to the whole veneer surface. For small panels like this we clamped directly to the double up melamine. Larger panels can be done the same way but using additional hardwood cauls to distribute pressure.

Good job. You could try Rubio Monocoat for finish. Very easy to apply and to fix if needed. Impossible to miss, and as the name suggest: one coat is enough and dry to the touch right away!
