Old boomboxes sometimes had plastic knobs with a metal veneer glued on. I miss the old boomboxes.

I can remember having one of the Hitachi 3 D superwoofers with the cd player, I only tried batteries in it once and it ate it's way through them in a short time

About "take it to the beach." I lived in Coney Island in the 1970s, and boomboxes were popular on the boardwalk. Anyway, seems like a kind of fun unit.

I think it's pretty cool. Not something that I necessarily want or need but I appreciate the design. I really like the light show feature.

Good evening from NY.
There is much pleasure, and some good sound, on listening to tapes, for me.
Glad I have a few good chrome and metal cassettes blanks from back then, still, and a few partially recorded mix tapes ( can do-over).
Other viewers, do what you can with components or things like this boom box to enjoy tapes.

I am trying to finish the first mix tape I've done since the late 90s or so. Dubbing from LP and CD.
The cassette I am re-recording on I last started earlier mixtape on sometime back then (I date my finished one.).
This is with the vintage deck I sent for repair recently.

Very cool unit! I like the lights and meters. None of MY boomboxes of the 80s & 90s ever had anything like that!
Very impressed by it having a stereo head on the tape deck. That seems like something that's hard to find nowadays.
Also I love that you played NKOTB music! I was a huge fan myself (though I was in high school at the time).

The reason 5 or 10W speakers sound so good compared to the old days when we were rocking on our "30, 40, 50, 80W" etc. boom boxes, is that they were marketing numbers. Those were Peak watt, rather than true or RMS numbers. Most of the boom boxes back in the day were running around 3 to 12 watts per line tops, even on the ones touting 80W with Maxx Bass!! lol. The rare, super expensive ones were actually running 40 to 50 watts combined on all channels. Which, is still around 8 watts per line when you figure the expensive ones were running 6 speaker systems.
EDIT: Usually the super clear and nice ones you could crank up with no distortion, had two true 15W Low/Full range, two 8W mids, and two 2W tweets.

I like the combination of retro design meets modern features aspect of the unit.

This is the first NEW boombox that would interest me. Although last year I bought a NOS Koss Boombox from something like 1999. It is awesome...

I just bought one listed as parts for $50. Seller said it was dead and didn't turn on and CD and tape were also broken. Will see what's wrong with it and hopefully it's something simple. It definitely looks best in silver, the other colors look kind of bad on it.

EDIT: I got it and it works perfectly! Seller said both CD and tape were broken and it didn't turn on. But it worked fully and with no problems? It does have something wonky with the tape deck, someone smashed the record button too hard and the cassette assembly is pushed out of alignment stuck halfway in record mode, will have to fiddle with that. The little balls that hold the CD on the hub spindle also are gone and rattling around inside the unit somehow, will try and fix that too.

Wow!! That's a good looking boombox. I had over 30 radios in my life span.

I had a boom box radio 📻 back in the 80’s

At least the VUs are stereo too, although they would have to calibrate them better in future models, since the way they move does not resemble the ones that traditional vintage equipment comes with.

Seems quite a nice unit. The VU meters, although cool, do not seem to serve any useful purpose other than cosmetic. I bought myself a retro designed Studebaker radio recently, and it also seems quite well made.

I am still looking for a good portable radio that has excellent AM reception like my old Realistic hand held which had AM/FM and 5 SW bands with a stereo compact cassette. It only had a single speaker, but plugging in my 1/4" headphones was stereo. It ran on 4 "D" cells but it would play the radio at room volume for almost a full week on those 4 eveready's, when Duracell came out they ran my radio for for at least 3 weeks before they finally ran out of power.

I’ve had my studebaker fir two years, not even a year in my show light of the vu meter stopped my cassette play lags a bit and found two small springs fall from the unit, other then that it sounds good for $195 bucks. I wish someone would come out with a quality built boombox that has a CD player, cassette player, radio Bluetooth capability not too plasticky like this unit, I’ll pay $2k for it!
