Oh my god, Ive been messing around with this for hours and I just couldn't get it to retain file and group ownership. Even though im very familiar with rsync, I had completely forgotten to use sudo as it wasnt required on my old ReadyNAS setup.
I can now stick with rsync instead of that godawful Active Backup for Business gui tool.
You just made my day buddy, thankyou so so much!!

Nice! you can also add "--progress" and "--stats" to rsync if it works for you

I have a public rsync authorized key. How can I tell my Synology to sync those files? I want to sync from their folder to mine

Does the Frank user have administrator privs? Seems like only admins are able to SSH.

What additional steps are needed if the Synology NAS is on a different network, not part of your home network? At that point do the firewall ports of the router where the NAS is located need to be manually opened? Anything else? Thanks.

I have spent most of the day trying to setup a backup process to Synology using RaspiBackup but kept hitting permission issues on folders. This has worked a dream. I have 2 questions:
1. Can this be used for a restore if my Pi goes down?
2. You talked about possibly creating an automation - is there a video with an automation available?
Thank you so much for this

It seems your Linux server/pc is on the same local network. Do you know any secure and stable way to backup a Linux web server hosted on another country?

but its not working on SLES 10. Any solution?

Is it dangerous to open port 22 in the firewall?

automating this would be very handy. i'm presuming a cron job with a relevant bash script? if ssh keys are in place, i'm assuming there will be no confirmation needed?

I get an error and have no idee at all, what's the reason could be. Can you please help?

Wudertech comments are disabled, so last chance is here.
My NAS sees the pi and starts doing the backup but always fails after ~45''.
The logs only says "failed" and nothing useful. I'm guessing there's either a timeout on the connection, or the amount of data transfered since it never does more than 11Gb. Some king of issue with temp/cache files?
Anyone has a guess, or knows where to get more detailed logs?

Does this backup method, write over the first backup and so on? Is there a way to get a separate (unique) incremental or differential back up daily or weekly?

Does it retain file permissions? If you perform a restore, does each individual directory and file have the original permissions and ownership?

Fantastic! Thanks for the instruction.

Note, for DSM 7.2 at least, you can NOT use rsync to backup to a synology if you backup / this is because synology will write everything as your login username, unlike real rsync, where you connect as user but configure it to store as UID/GID "0" ergo keeping correct permissions and ownerships no matter the linux user. This allows an easy restore which despite what the followup to this video says cant be done, CAN in fact be done, I've done it, many others have done it, successfully well using a non virus based distro (ie: non systemd) like slackware, it works fine.

Im sure that you could not have instructed any faster in this video.. I was keen to see how the process was set up but the speed with which you spoke, clicked and clicked again left me behind totally... I am now having to pause the instructions and flick back and fro to follow the instructions
