Sick of all the comparisons. I’m from Portsmouth grew up in the 80’s and 90’s when you couldn’t even walk through the city if you or your family wasn’t known. But times change be happy that they are cleaning up these neighborhoods and making it safer for our youth rather then debating on who hood the toughest. Fun fact: there’s a hood everywhere you go and everywhere you go there’s someone who will peel your cap no matter were you are so don’t ever be fooled by how something looks nor take it lightly.

I was stationed in Newport News, while CVN-72 was being built in the shipyard back in 88 -89. It is crazy how fast you can be in a really crappy neighborhood and then you turn two corners and it looks like Homes of the Rich and Famous.

Hey Charlie, your're perfecting your craft as a journalist for a specific sector of society. I hope you get big enough to branch out to other hoods globally and not just black people. You would be the ONLY journalist covering intimate street life regularly, which will give people a better understanding of how diverse working class and poor neighborhoods are. Continue to sho the good, the bad and ugly.


If you don't mind, I would like to share some advice. Lean into what you're doing as a journalist because that's what you are now. Take the time to research and study situations and during questioning, script your questions so you know major topics you prefer to cover. Keep it organic of course.


You know the deal, I'm just adding my wack 2 cents because I know you can dominate this niche area of journalism. Whatever made you focus on this was a blessing in disguise. I would be great if you could make a living doing this full time and hire people familiar with other culture to do the same.

WOW!! I've never seen so many housing projects in such close proximity!! There's one project, cross the street and there's another project, and two blocks away yet ANOTHER project, and on and on it goes!! I have to say most of these projects appear attractive and well kept, at least from the outside.

The projects show the benefit of spreading the units out and reducing the concentration of people in any given area. The best projects I have seen so far on youtube.

I'm from Newport News, born and raised, it has its mini hoods throughout the city like any other city, but DOWNTOWN past Mercury blvd off Jefferson ave is a whole new situation LOL.
