Also wool blankets can be you're friend.
The Taliban would use wool to hide from thermal or so I have heard.

I'm out in Ukraine right now and one word: Umbrellas. My 10, 000 dollar thermal drone cant see past a 10 dollar umbrella...it just spreads the heat out to well. FML.

I bought a camo Whoobie and cut it open, stuffed an emergency blanket edge to edge inside of it and stitched it back up. It makes you near invisible to thermal imagery, aint much louder than youd be anyway with full kit, and only cost me 40$ and two hours of my time.
Only downside is it works a little too well, a pitch black blob can give you away just as easily as nothing if you're positioning improperly.

Trees always appear to be bright from a ground perspective with thermal (ECOTI), so that makes the idea even better.

Space blanket attached to a poncho liner can be effective as well

The best way to see a person in thermal when you have a lot of surrounding thermal sources that look equally hot because of residual heat soaked up from the daytime sun is Contrasting backgrounds.
Its why certain thermal colour palettes are better for distinguishing between hot and slightly cooler objects than just white hot or black hot.
In my experience Rainbow and Ultramarine are good for backgrounds that blend in a little bit too much amd have little contrast.
As for how to defeat thermal, well, thick clothing or a thick blanket is best and not running around and building up your heat signature is good too lol.
Even light cover from some tree branches is good at masking heat.
Depends also on how good the thermal imaging capabilities are of the scope/monocular or camera you're using, some more expensive military models are way more sensitive to slightly differing temps, so it's harder for a person to hide next to something that has residual heat from the daytime sun as you'll still stand out like a Beacon of heat.

Even better would be a big pice of cardboard, it would mask you completely. Also in fixed positions vs. sniper at night. Have a cardboard IR shield with a hole to look through.

a good place to hide from thermal imaging cameras is under windows/glass. like a conservatory
