Swim University makes pool and hot tub care easy for millions of homeowners. Each year, we continue to help more people with water chemistry, cleaning, and troubleshooting. We know taking care of a swimming pool or spa can be difficult. And it’s hard to find a trusted source of information. This is the reason we created Swim University.

Have you ever wondered if you have to use chemicals to clean your pool? Some products you find at your local grocery store can do just as good a job as the products marketed specifically for pool cleaning, which can save you quite a bit of money.

Just wanted to say that when I first stumbled upon this channel (searching pool maintenance) I immediately became hooked by your energy and humor. I’ve seen a few of your videos and they’ve all been very clear and concise. I subbed immediately. Not because of the things mentioned above but because of your commitment to wearing that shirt In most the videos. 😂 Great content!

Sodium hypochlorite is sodium hypochlorite. In the fall when all the pool chemicals go on clearance, I buy the gallons of pool chlorine for using in laundry. It's just a higher concentration, so you use less in the wash than you would normally put in.

Thank you for your videos. I follow your advice and my pool that is used almost daily by multiple people is always clear. I brush it several times a week, shock every Sunday evening. Check levels 2x a week, keep it covered when not in use. Bought a skimmer and hand skim daily. I recently put tennis balls in to soak up the oils. Works amazingly well.

I know alot of people say bleach is cheaper than liquid, But not really Clorox has only about 5% sodium hyperchlorite. Pool esentials at Walmart has 10% for 3.64 a gallon. So Clorox you need twice as much. 🤓

I subscribed to your channel after watching this video. Thank you so much!! You're my go to guy for pool care. This bleach, borax, & baking soda video is the best, most informative on YouTube.

Informative, as always, but one major point that was left out regarding boric acid is that it can be used to stabilize pH. That's very significant for those of us who have salt chlorine generators.

Your videos have been extremely helpful!! We just put ours up one week ago by getting lucky at Walmart with the last one the shelf. Chemicals have been hard to find also! So now knowing I can do with household items will be extremely helpful!!

This was really helpful since I bought my pool during quarantine. It was a real mission getting it in the first place and impossible to get products for it. So thank you !

One thing to mention - the amount of bleach to add would depend on the CYA level in your pool (stabilizer). “Stabilizer” or CYA (Cyanuric Acid) acts as “sun screen” for your chlorine (sodium hypochlorite / bleach). You need a proper pool test kit to test CYA, but if the level is high, you’re going to need more than 1 gallon per 10, 000 gallons of water to reach the desired chlorine ppm level to kill any algae.

Ugh....went on vacation for a week and all it did here at home was rain rain rain. My pool has been green since before i came home (5 days ago) and ive managed to lighten the color but its still green! I guess I'll try straight bleach tonight and see if thats the final blow. Ive already added the chloriator liquid with algaecide in it, and ive shocked it 3 times. 😒 All levels were good last i checked them except for an obvious high chlorine level.
