In this lesson, you will learn about the negative exponent rule, negative exponent definition, multiplying negative exponents, and how to work with negative powers.

Expressions and Equations Work with radicals and integer exponents.

Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions. For example, 32 × 3-5 = 3-3 = 1/33 = 1/27.

I am from a rural town in South Carolina, college was not something I ever thought I would do, but here I am. I have always struggled with math but your videos have helped me more than anything else ever has. I am grateful.

Thank you so much I have been really struggling with this as my math skills are terrible and all the videos I watched so far just confused me! This has really helped.

Wow. I just realized how many tests I would have failed without you. You have single handedly saved my grade, and for that I must give you a round of applause, irl.

Really helped me. I'm studying economics and data and needed a quick video refresher. Thank you for you for the visual, fun, and short styling of this video. Muchas gracias!

Thank you for this explanation. It was clear, and easy to understand.

For further understanding, will you please explain the following:

In practical application, what real world example would require a mathematical solution with a negative exponent?

Basicslly... What physical thing or concept would be represented by the base, and what physical thing or concept would be represented by the negative exponent?

Visualization is extremely helpful to me when internalizing concepts.

I was trying to help my little sister and realized I forgot how to do this. Thank you for the short and sweet refresher

Bro, thank you so much, I've been so confused with this, btw-if u can, could u upload a video explaining how to solve bigger equations that have negative exponents and division and such? Please and thank you:) Ex= 2x^-4/4^-3x^2×y^0

Another way to solve this is to actually write out what the whole thing change it so it says *2*2*2*2*2 and if you know that 1/2 times 2 will cancel out into 1, then you can see that after all of the canceling you are left with 1/2*1/2*1/2 which is the same thing as 1/8.

Another way to solve this is to rewrite 2^-8 as a positive exponent but write it in the denominator under the 2^5 that it looks like

2^5
____
2^8

and then you can expand it so it reads

2*2*2*2*2

2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2

You can see that pairs of 2"s will cancel out and you will be left with
1
____
2*2*2

which is the same thing as

1
__
8
