This is crazy. Housing should never be out of reach. It is a human right to have shelter.

Imagine taking out a student loan for 1million bucks to become a doctor and you and the bank know you will never pay it back in your life time and then have to live in a storage container while you go to school.

Welcome to America everyone, the richest place on earth.

Housing just keeps getting worse and worse.

and charge them a small fortune to live on said barge.

That’s BS. There’s so many safety issues with throwing people on barges the Universities would quickly find out there is no upside to that idea.

There are *29 empty homes* per every ONE homeless person.
There are 1 *million* empty homes in California.
Housing should be a human right, period. The fact that it isn't makes us a lesser country.

One good college party, and they'll understand why it is an incredibly stupid idea.

Or you could just build affordable housing. Kids all over the world can't go to school where they want because cost of living. Its disgusting. Society is losing so much potential. But enjoy your property values.

300x90 ft divided by 600 students comes out to 45 sq ft per student. That's a 5x9 ft space. That's about the same size as a prison cell. 800 students reduces the area to 33.75 sq ft per student. That doesn't account for equipment, bathrooms, or other necessities for living.

So they want to stack students like cord wood.

Actually, pre-pandemic, in 2021 at my Junior College in California. Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA, housing has always been an issue for years. What does the city do about the housing disparity, they cater to California Polytechnic State University. They've expanded housing for students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, but meanwhile Community College students were becoming homeless. What I actually approved of was Cuesta College was going to allow students to live on Campus in Recreational Vehicles. They would've had to be licensed, registered, and proof of insurance to park on campus. But they would've been allowed to take showers at the gymnasium on Campus and use their food stamps at the Campus Dining Hall. Everything was going great until the pandemic. But, I'm starting to hear that Cuesta College might have to go back to students living in RV's again if enrollment doesn't taper off?

This isn't how I remember the show "The Suite Life on Deck"

Creative...but exceedingly regressive and unsustainable. California is behind on building regulations, city council is extremely stubborn, things need to change, we need more housing more than ever.

Housing is a basic human right, not a profit making commodity. Screw all the landowners that refuse to build affordable housing because of their precious "property values".

*We have this in Rotterdam. The student boat is one of the coolest places in the city. The students love it*

It can't be that hard to build multi stories buildings for housing!! I m not saying it's easy to create more houses but I know there s a solution between massive unhousing and "prison boat"!!!

Forget protests, it's time for a goddamn riot.

I’ve always believed that we could solve the homeless problem by restoring retired or docked cruise ships.

Housing is or should be a right for all.

Reasons I told my senior to please not worry about us and LEAVE. THE. STATE. for college. He's got guaranteed housing, ON CAMPUS for as long as he wants it. The CA college system (which I went through a million years ago) has gotten absolutely ridiculous these days and I'll gladly pay to not have to deal with it.

I'm all for the boat-dorm, but the teachers and faculty also have to live there, and they have to dress and talk like pirates 24/7.
