My thoughts? Just let the RAF and Royal Navy get their hands on this aircraft - they will show you what it can do in the right, capable hands. The aviation world laughed at the subsonic Harrier, the USMC thought different - they put their trust and reputation on it. American critics have trashed this aircraft before it has even entered service. BAE systems are not known for co-operating on lost causes, and I am sure they and Lockheed Martin see a successful future for this aircraft - possibly one of the last piloted front line aircraft to go into NATO service. The future being UAV. As a Brit, I wish this venture every success and be damned with all you Job's comforters' out there.

I love that weird little howl it does before it takes off. Some kind of intake harmonic or something...

@minuteman3 I can certainly tell you one thing for sure. It's not a waste of money by any means. The things this jet can do is even more advanced than the F 22 technology wise. It really is something and we are now starting to reach goals, and surpassing many expectations and requirements for its design also. Just days ago the jet finished a static test at BAE in the UK. 5 months ahead of time. It's design was to structurally support 9 G's max. It did 13.5 with 0 structural damage. More later...

Let the haters go on a rant. Whether or not this aircraft is a good one will only be known in real combat. The haters and "experts" are STILL hating on the F-16 and yet it is considered a good fighter jet by many Nations.

@minuteman3 Sorry for the misunderstanding. The sound you hear in this video is nothing like the live sound when it throttles up. It starts with deep bellow. I've never heard anything like it. Right now the Pres promises to veto any bill that includes the the Rolls Royce, GE F 136 as the alternate. We hope it doesn't go that way for obvious reasons I'm sure you are aware of.

Well look at that, seems to climb as well as the F-15. Dont discount its wide body. The F-15 proved that a wide body acts as a wing itself when a enemy jet collided with the F-15, tore its right wing off, and still managed to fly home safely. Yes, a F-15 can fly with only one wing.

@EvilxMerlin Actually there is. At first they wanted to call it the F/A-22 but bc they never made a B variant its just F-22a. Unless the pilots I work with are lying then thats just wrong.

@minuteman3 When I joined the navy, I was sent to an F 4 squadron. I now work for LM where you see this video is being shot. The sound the F135 makes is unmistakeable and is like no other. It starts with a deep moan and is nothing like the j 79. I worked with the crew that launched the chase plane on this day.

@Skyfire1977 The J-79 engines in the F-4 phantom did the same thing. I think it was a characteristic of the fan blades or something like that . Really kewl sound though.

@ballzbroz I completely agree the f-22 is way better for air to air, but it lacks at air to ground where the f-35 does not. As long as they dont replace the f-22 with it, it really sucks how they only are making i think 200 f-22s

@eLpeach

LoL...I don't think so. Worked with 15's and 22's all day at Langley...no one ever stated anything like that. Not to mention, they do it regularly and everything is fine.

@rag5206 I agree we shouldnt be getting the F-35, but i think the Grippen is getting old, even though its late 90's. It would need upgrading and such, i think the EF typhoon would better suit us mixed with the Super Hornet, but having said that operating 2 aircraft is also cost ineffective

@brofranomo I didn't say the two sounded like each other I said that the J79 (which was also in the F-104) made a shriek when spinning up. The sound in this video could have been caused by a number of things including vibrations in the microphone. My first duty station in the USAF in 1984 had F-4's so I am very familiar with the sound. I just hope that the F-35 doesn't turn out like the F-4 or the F-105 as a very expensive jack of all trades and master of none that gets pilots killed.

@Jasonjays122 However, in performance the F-22a is unmatched. JSF was designed to be second to the F-22a bc it will be exported to other nations while the raptor never will.

The Gripen has one engine too.The other two planes are very good, but overall have less capability than the F-35. You're right that they would be fine for right now, but it's generally a good thing to account for the unpredictable future. The F-35 airframe will also remain useful for the longest amount of time, most likely. The other planes would need upgrades to reach the basic JSF's capability.

Radar is not the only way to guide missiles, and stealth cannot make a plane immune to lock on. The F-35 is unsurprisingly not invulnerable, it's just tough to beat.

It might be old, but the F-16 will always be the queen of the skies! <3
