Antonis Tzelepis plays a great success of the Barefoot Diva from Cape Verde, the great Cesária Évora, born in the town of Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente, in Cape Verde on August 27, 1941. Evora met when she was 16 years old a Cape Verde, named Eduardo. He was the man who taught her the traditional musical styles of coladeiras and mornas. The latter are songs of sadness, melancholy and nostalgia. Cesária started singing in local bars and hotels. With the help of local musicians, she would show off her skills and later be named "Queen of Morna" by her fans. Jose da Silva, a Frenchman from Cape Verde, persuaded her to go to Paris where she recorded the album La Diva Aux Pieds Nus (The Barefoot Diva) in 1988. The song "Sodade" was her first international success and her first of its success in France which was not in French. This marked the beginning of the world fame for the singer from Africa. The Portuguese term saudade has a complex meaning, which is difficult to translate. It generally means nostalgia, lust, sorrow and repentance. The expression "sodade" is an internal element in the music of Cape Verde. That album was critically acclaimed and she began her career with it, continuing with her 1992 album Miss Perfumado, which was even more successful. Thus, the singer became an international star at the age of 47. In September 2011 she announced that she was ending her music career, canceling her scheduled concerts, as she was "in a state of great exhaustion". Evora underwent open heart surgery in 2010 in Paris after severe problems with her coronary aorta. She finally passed away on December 17, 2011 while being treated in the intensive care unit in critical condition . . .
