Drawing Perspective With Intuition

Does perspective have to be 100% accurate?

In my Drawing Basics course we're gonna learn a small amount of the math. Just enough to understand how to approach perspective with INTUITION. We'll have several fun projects to help you practice visualizing perspective.

That’s a good little tip, it’s easy to get stuck in this idea of creating perfect perspective but in the end it’s all just a trick to fool the viewer into seeing depth, so you can just create the “idea” of depth instead of pursuing perfect realistic depth

I'm the biggest Kim Jung Gi fan and even seeing his drawings makes me excited

This is why it is better to teach the principles of foreshortening rather than going overboard telling students to practice drawing lines to make it super accurate. It doesn’t have to be accurate, it just has to be good enough.

I’m actually planning on making a video on ‘principles of foreshortening’, but for now… Keep drawing circles.

I remember Peter han saying in a class I took with him "you don't need to be the best artist ever to be a good artist, you just need to be good enough" and it always stayed with me and helped me overcome part of my strive for "perfect" art, and instead focus on being believable enough 🎉

Kim Jung Gi and Kentaro Miura were unbelievable masters at this. The teachings and messages I’ve learned from them have been so formative— both creatively and personally— and will always be dear to me. RIP.

Take care of your heart, both figuratively and physically. Be kind to yourself, take more walks and spend more time with loved ones. The lessons will be mastered in time with purposeful practice. Volition and patience are key.

Lately I've been hearing more and more about how breaking the mathematical boundaries a little is what makes expressive and nice art, which is very good to know/realise for myself

“How do perspective?”
“Just wing it bro”
Honestly it’s the best advice
(As long as you have the basics down already)

My heart aches seeing Kim Jung Gi's work. I, like so so many others, admired him and was so inspired by him. Thank you for using his art as a reference for perspective done so well ❤

I plan to learn to do it mathematically and then once I actually understand the basics, take those and work towards making it interesting.

I love How every single advice about art Just boils down to "practice more"

Had a drawing professor that shared, "draw what you see, not what you think you see." This vid kinda just fleshed that idea out a bit more for me. Thanks

There's a lot more nuance to the concept. Perspective can often be wildly out of proportion with real life, such as a fist that seemingly grows twice its size for the illusion of a close up shot, or a character's legs that appear to shrink dramatically during an overhead shot. They may be incorrect but it might fit the story telling or art style better and that extra level of narrative satisfaction adds to the suspension of disbelief. It is a powerful tool that can alllow for very wild displays in even grounded works of art when implemented with care and thought.

This was a hard lesson to learn in college. When i was drawing something that WAS correct, but looked very wrong, my professor had to tell me i needed to draw it wrong, in order for it to look right. It was almost like an optical illusion

This is very true! And contrary to popular belief, true mathematical perspective can actually look so static that it feels off, uncanny, or lifeless. I've been drawing for my entire life, I'm mostly self taught but have taken classes to learn fundamentals that I otherwise probably wouldn't have investigated on my own. There is no shame in being taught one way or another. I believe as long as you're putting pencil to paper, you're learning!

I am at a point where drawing perspective lines confuses me a lot. Id rather eyeball it.

Trying to be too mathematical about it completely destroys my interest, so I don't bother. Intuition is fun, if I want perfection I may as well get ai to do it.
