MY SOCIAL MEDIA:

Do you want to improve your pronunciation? I have launched my British English (Modern RP) pronunciation course! I’ll train you to read phonetic transcriptions, and produce each sound that comprises modern received pronunciation. I’ll also teach you how to implement the correct use of intonation, stress, rhythm, connected speech, and much more. We’ll compare similar sounds, and look at tricky topics like the glottal stop and the dark L.
Technically, I need to mark this as an AD even though it is my own company so - AD :)

It's -very impressive- _significant_ how much a video can help my writing. My friends always tell me I’m -very curious- _inquisitive_ when it comes to self-improvement, which is right, since I've watched this -very useful- _practical_ video.

So I conclude that I should watch these kind of videos more often, since I get to be the -very smart- _ingenious_ kid in my class😄

Time to write with my -very positive- _optimistic_ mood!!

I just found this channel and I'm so in love with the lessons. I'm a Brazilian girl improving my English in order to start giving English classes to Brazilian natives.

As a native English speaker I can assure any one who is learning that we use these all so much in speech, the only place this kind lesson is important is in formal writing

'Said' isn't all that bad. Sure, it's not all that exciting, but not every dialogue has to be. When speaking about what somebody said, it would sound dramatic and unnatural to try to replace 'said' for something more exciting.

The best thing about this channel is that it equally helps those with a basic knowledge of the language as well as advanced students. Thanks!

A very good lesson Lucy. I said just yesterday I really want to increase my vocabulary, but that's a thing of the oops! Hehe. Seriously though, great lesson and I particularly enjoyed your dramatic moments at 4.37

'Very' is a useful word for when you don't want to sound like a gutter-press journalist. Used in the right context, it shows that you are capable of using a range of expressions indicating 'to a greater degree', rather than resorting to hyperbole and over-dramatising a situation. For example: "I was very pleased", rather than "I was absolutely ecstatic" would be used to show an elevated level of pleasure, rather than uncontrollable joy. It is an English word; learn to use it where appropriate.

Actually, I was taught on my literature classes that simple "said" often is much better than whole variety of descriptive verbs. We can use them, of course, but we shouldn't trust them entirely, because they are able to make our story sound cheap. These "rich" descriptions of dialogues are characteristic for poorly written literature, like harlequins or other, so it is not recommended to use them so freely

2:45 it's relieving when we know even natives could have mistakes like this, this is one of common mistakes I made especially when I talk quickly

In fiction, writers are actively encouraged to break the "don't use said because it's boring" rule. This is because readers pay little attention to the attributions, other than to keep track of who is saying what. Using more descriptive words can take the reader out of the story, as it draws attention away from the dialogue and toward the attributions. Plus, descriptive attributions are "tell" rather than "show", so you need to be aware of this when you are trying to "show".

There is no reason to "avoid" the words mentioned in this video, though one shouldn't overuse them. Constantly avoiding everyday words can make your speech or your writing seem overheated or flowery, much like a schoolgirl's attempt at "literature" in which every noun is paired with some dynamic adjective. Sometimes, simple, clear and effective communication benefits from venerable, basic words.
