In mexico and Latina America the term "morena" is also commonly used. I actually thought it was only a latin term my whole life. Its really interesting to learn about all the similarities between Asian countries and Latin countries with colorism

Watching this, i remember one of my friends in senior high school. When we saw each other in college, she went straight commenting about my skin color saying "o! ang itim mo pa rin" (you still dark) in front of her classmates... I-- I didn't know what to say at that time. I feel ashamed and embarrassed.. It's just so sad that it is happening here in the PH and feel down by my fellowmen. Thank you Jessica for discussing about this. I hope ppl here will realize that Morena is beautiful. Period.

"The role of the society would be allowing that kid to acknowledge all kinds of beauty that's out there. Giving him or her the ability to see a beauty in everything." Ohh thanks this is beautiful.

One of the reasons why I love watching Jessica's vlog is because she offers a really sensible insight about topics that are relevant. Sometimes, I forgot she's younger than me cos she's that mature. ♥

I'm from Mexico so seeing how Spanish colonization affects other countries in very similar ways it's very interesting

As a Filipino, I grew up witnessing how privileged those fair-skinned Filipinos. Easy life, indeed. But I'm glad there are influencers embracing their dark-skinned body which slowly made the society look for morenas.

Im a morena and I dont use whitening products. Tho, I did before, that was because I was thought that fairer skin is much priveleged than the morenas. Growing up, I started thinking that the skin colour doesnt matter and what matters is how you connect/interact to people. What matters is your manners towards other people around you.

Ps: I was one of the students my Prof called "Brown rice" in class. I had to call him out for "bullying" me and told him that brown rice is a healthy rice.

It’s so interesting because here in Australia, most of us that have pale skin use fake tan to look darker

I learn a lot more than what you put on the title. There' always an in-depth explanation of the ideas in your content. You are a woman of substance. You're not just a pretty face.

FACT: Jessica without makeup still stunning✨

Brown is beautiful because it's something different and unique. In Europe specially in Scandinavian countries, they are always fascinated by Filipina beauties with brown skin. They're tired looking at their pale and white skin with no glow due to lack of exposure to sunlight. I'm proud of the moreno/morena skin. Proud to be Pinoy.

I appreciate the history and awareness here, she definitely did the homework but as a tan Filipina something rubs me the wrong way about someone w lighter skin trying to darken it as a style or trend - lightweight black face but that’s pushing it but still ?? Like foxy eye trend ish idk, morena beauty isn’t a trend or style I can put on, this is my life. Just like “foxy eyes” aren’t a trend these are literally my forever eyes. But I do appreciate the history here! Intriguing vid for sure

Interestingly enough, people are led to think that "white" or "morena" are nice, but what they're actually looking for is pale/tan skin with rosy undertones rather than yellow warm(which most Filipinos have).

Compared to the 90s, marketing through media had a big impact in dictating what beauty standard is acceptable, but now because most Filipinos have an easy access to internet, we can watch wide range of images from all over the world and little by little our definition of beauty is broadening.

When Jessica knows more PH historical fact than a full blooded Filipino cares😭😂. Proud of you, Jessica.

i really love how i deeply resonates to this chats, i really love it, that i understood all the point, my consciousness and thoughts, you've said what i really want to say. also, the lost one. Makeup is something personal. It's really hurtening whenever i feel like i want to fix some makeup on my face, my mom would react furiously ask me where am i going, am i seeing some boys, she often refers to me when i take chance to wear makeup in a free day as "bigaon" she treats it as if something insane, a sickness of a mentally disturbed person, ambisyusa (very negatively), or 'hilas'. Why am i wearing makeup? she always asked "are you meeting a boy?" i really hate itm i just wanted to feel comfortable and confident about myself wearing makeup even in those unnecessary times where i don't even have plans to go outside. She always asks that i purposely wear makeup to impress boys outside, WHEN IN FACT I DON'T EVEN DATE NOR HAVE ANY BOYS AROUND IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD AM FLIRTING< i am not that type of person. She thinks that wearing makeup is only to look pretty for the boys, she don't understand.

Actually there are 3 types of beauty in Philippines this are:

•Morena (Moreno for men) before it only refers to a filipino who has brown skin but now it doesn't matter if you're half or not as long as you have dark or brown skin you are considered Moreno/Moreno like half filipino-indian & etc.

•Mestiza (Meztizo for men) This only refers to those who's half spanish or has spanish blood or european ancestors, but now even you have American or European features as long as you have fair skin and high bridge nose you are considered Mestiza/Mestizo.

•Chinita(Chinito for men) before when we say chinita/chinito it's only for those who have half chinese or has Chinese ancestry bacause even before Spanish came Chinese people already here in Philippines exchanging goods & etc. But now when we say chinita/chinito it's refers to EAST ASIAN look, pale skin & slanted eyes.

Im curious what Americans and Phillipino ppl think of her trying the morena style by making her skintone several shades darker.
If a white person does this w/ makeup, then they’re canceled for doing blackface, even if they were doing it to educate people about blackface.
This video Could be considered the asian version of that.

But if a light skinned asian person does this w trying to look morena, it’s considered okay. Why is that?
If a fair skinned, light skinned person with foreigner features like her put on morena makeup, and make her look cool bc her features are more acceptable, isn’t that cultural appropriation?
If she did this w/o the context of the video, would it be problematic, or not?
People don’t have to do blackface or colorist-related makeup to portray a point in a video. Could she have done it better by using images of actual morena people or inviting them to the video, instead of herself, who is Not a morena by any means?
Or do ppl just have their panties in a bunch and get offended by everything?
What are your thoughts?

I’m not sharing my personal opinion on this topic to keep things neutral, and mainly to ask the viewers what they think.
