Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo made good on her promise to swim in the Seine to show it is ready for the Olympics — now just nine days away! The river will play a key role in the Games, including for a boat parade during the opening ceremony and serving as a venue for athletes. NBC’s Meagan Fitzgerald reports for TODAY.

Mayor: It's perfectly safe. 5 minutes later: *starts course of strong antibiotics*

They banned it for a reason. Now 1.5 billion dollars later for the Olympics? Hmmm. I think the money could have been put to better use.

They are going to get so sick... The levels for harmful bacteria are like ... 3-5 times worse than safe minimums in the exact area of the bridge.

That water shouldn’t be an option for swimming. People have house boats they had to move before the events. Where do you think the waste from those boats go. You can’t see 5” into that water 🤯

She needs to be examined by a doctor immediately.

I could splash around in my toilet water and probably be okay but I still choose not to.

Remember Obama sipping that glass of drinking water to prove it was safe....though he never really sipped it.

I get the big hole was dug to hold runoff and sewage filled rain water, but what about the contaminated water that’s already in the river?

Let’s pray for the athletes who have to swim in that. Imagine taking in that water 🤢 hopefully no one gets ill from it. Don’t want this to be the thing that ruins the Olympics in Paris.
