This week, The School focuses on two strikingly similar boys: one nearing his final year and another who is only just starting out at secondary school. Both are exploding with energy and charm but, to their teacher's frustration, neither of them are that interested in learning. As Year 10 student Tom approaches his GCSEs his failure to settle down is starting to cause concern. And although Year 7 Robbie-Joe's constant chatter seems harmless (and is often hilarious) his teachers are worried it's a sign of more serious things to come. This episode follows the school in their attempts to channel Tom and Robbie-Joe s boundless energy in the right direction. We see how a chance, life-changing event radically alters the course of Tom's year and watch as the school does all they can to intervene early with Robbie-Joe. Ultimately, this is a film about two inspirational teachers guiding two lively lads through some of the toughest times they will face at school

This film was first broadcast: 19 Sep 2013

Robbie being late for helping a boy in crunches is fine. Bro was called a liar, when it’s on camera.

actually painful to watch Robbie Joe who so clearly has adhd. from being so upset being told off, and showing off knowing his percentages i feel like he’s actually smart and their approach really failed this kid. Maybe im biased after being similar in school for a while but i was lucky enough to have a school that understood a loud voice doesn’t necessarily equate to not caring or being intentionally disruptive or rude

these kids are almost deffo neurodivergent, and it hurts to see them being blamed, shamed and punished for things they can't help and aren't proud of

The biggest thing I noticed in these shows is the fact that there is no psychologist, psychiatrist or mental health professional available to diagnose the children who have "behavioural issues" with potential neurodivergence or mental health conditions. There are so many children that have been exploited here without proper intervention and protection of their mental health, or referrals to professionals. Some of these children have left the school/show and ended up in prison, it could be prevented.

All these years later it still blows my mind that 1- the year 7 was rang out for helping his pal on crutches…these teachers are the sort to have “be kind” on their profile. And 2- that poor lad who lost his brother was in school the next day, like what?! I get it if he didn’t want to be at home or his parents couldn’t cope with what they had to do around him but the school shoulda just let him be outta lessons, like give him a quiet room & just keep an eye on him.

Can’t believe how much that teacher had a go at Robbie Joe for only being 5 minutes late when all he was doing was helping he’s friend upstairs

Bless these two young men. I strongly suspect both of them have undiagnosed ADHD.
I read hope they're both doing better now.

That English teacher was lovely! Honestly it was really sad seeing Tom so upset and it made me cry. I wish the other teachers took more of this kind of take.

That Mrs. Uren was havin a right go at Robbie for practically nothing. He put someone else before himself and she caused the poor lad to cry, what a rude one she is.

Seeing the behavior of these two kids really hits home to me. My sister had a very similar behavior and everytime, was close to be expelled from school. It was not easier at home, but we could limit the problems by keeping her busy constantly (both physically and mentally at once) and by being always on the lookout of what she was doing. It was found out that she has ADHD. At school, adults were behaving similarly to her and as a result, she developed a lack of confidence and aggressive behaviors, which took a decade to stabilize. Some behaviors related to ADHD make kids and teens considered as immature and defiant.

Careful! I am not using it as an excuse to their behavior. Just that most time, consequences given to unruly "ordinary" kids don´t work.

Robbie-Joe's eyes tell a thousand words (when he was ridiculously scolded and in the thumbnail of this video)

Their school is horrible. Yelling at him - for losing his French book !?!

Why don’t schools recognise any of this behavior? I had awful adhd school and got no help at all

Throughout this show we've seen the teachers go above and beyond for some students, but they seem to drop the ones with serious issues. We were all this age once and your state of mind is completely different. Everyone has different maturity levels / hormones all of the place.

Discipline is obviously important, but so is understanding that these kids have different needs. Some need more help than others. You always remember the teachers that were great and the ones that weren't

the kid who got kicked out at 18:43 for that bro 😭

"Tried everything and nothing has worked" Yeah perhaps thats due to him being neurodivergent. All these kids seem to be. They need help and support, no amount of detention is gonna fix that. Speaking as someone who was the same as them in school.

Kind and considerate helping his friend, teacher needs to apologise to him for her shouting

‘Miss Uren’ is a very unfortunate name to have while teaching a class of 7th graders.

I honestly think this was frightful! Two clearly ADHD kids, one verbally stimming.. getting told off for nothing lol oh hold on, one was berated because he helped a kid on crutches! And the state of the handling of poor Tom! Jesus, some sen training would help!

It's a shame, you can clearly see there's some real potential in both of those boys. It seems like there's definitely some underlying causes for their bad behaviour. I hope they were both able to mature and find their ability to do well
