Magnus Carlsen is one of the greatest chess players of all time making his defeat VERY unlikely, however in a late night bar in Oslo, Norway, Magnus suffered a defeat to an Amateur player who managed to defeat the World Champion...

"very visibly unhappy", shows Carlsen smiling and handshaking politely.

A now has bragging rights over 99.999% of the chess world. He is definitely a king among his chess buddies

Wouldn't call that guy a "beginner". Definitely looked like he knew what he was doing and had some planning skills.

He only took the piece because he wanted to follow the rule in chess called "touch move", because he touched the opponent's knight, he was forced to capture it if he were playing along FIDE rules.

At 4:07, I like how you explain the blunder. It's not just that Magnus overlooked that the black Knight is protected by the Queen. He intended to fork King and Queen with Qxg4 Qxg4 and then Nxh6 (note that the board is set up incorrectly). His blunder was failing to recognize that Qxg4 by black is actually a check. Nice video!

Am I wrong to think Magnus jumped the gun with his queen and realized it, but continued on with the play because he touched the opponent's knight? It seems like he was an absolute gent about it, realized he'd touched his piece and took the loss.
He's a good sport.

To shed some light on Carlsen's perspective, he was probably feeling a lot of pressure, while the other guy had nothing to lose. He only had 30 secs so he had to beat him FAST. Since he made even 1 mistake, it would be near impossible for him to catch up and beat him before the clock runs out.

"Quick moves, and confidence" -- He was playing with only 30 seconds on the clock.

Imagine this guy's flex potential after this match

I was like How the hell did Magnus lose against an amateur?

And then I saw that this dude was definitely not a beginner, he definitely knew what he was doing. And also when I saw that Magnus only had 30 seconds, I was like "Oh, that makes sense."

Was his opponent a beginner or an amateur?? Big difference… he plays really well

The thing about being a beginner is that they don't have a strategy like someone advanced, so the beginner's can't be always predicted. There was actually a Hikaru no Go (anime about Go) episode 9 with this type of situation happening. Though notable, this happened to the #1 ranked player against a beginner.

That wasn't a blunder on magnus's part, he could have taken that knight with the bishop on c2, but under the time constraint he blundered the queen.
