FIRST LOOK from the 2023 Orlando Hamcation, we stopped by the Icom booth and talk with Ray Novak, N9JA, about the Icom IC-905 SHF Transceiver. The radio isn't available for purchase yet, but it will be coming later this year, and this is the first time we have seen one live. I like that icom is making products for lesser used amateur bands. Makes it easier to actually get into.

Seems a little big and somewhat complicated, but that will be less so for me when I look into it more. I would really like to see it in person when it comes out.

I'm glad icom is using the same interface in multiple radios. I am looking at getting an ic 705 for sota and pota. I like my current radio, but it is a bit big. I would like to have the space for other supplies while on the trail.

OK, how about an all mode 2m rig 50ish watts mobile rig. Not everybody has the bucks for this kind of toy. And rural hams, some of these bands would never be used.

And a data port for Winlink, etc

I like it and have a reservation on one at HRO but price is going to be the determining factor in getting one or not

Quoting their flyer:
"Output power is 10 W on 144 / 430 / 1200 MHz, 2 W on 2400 / 5600 MHz and 0.5 W on 10 GHz"

German distributor DIFONA listing pre-order at 3.600 Euro.

The Ethernet cable seems to be fixed to the RF module and their promotion video is referring to 20 meter distance between controller and RF module as an example - I hope this doesn't mean we are stuck with that cable length and it can be extended to get maximum benefit of the setup.

Also their is no reference to satellite operation unfortunately.

cool radio. Maybe something for the Es’hail 2 / QO-100 stationary ham satellite transponder with uplink on 2.4ghz and downlink on 10ghz.

Would have preferred waterproof ethercon or similar connectors on the ethernet cable.

Standard POE or augmented POE..

the bigger question to ask what else can it do?? I ask this because if I am going to waste money in the deployment I would want coverage of 1-3 or more head units so everything can monitored, from 21-50Mhz, 108-180MHz, 220-270 MHz, 430-478MHz 850-950MHz..

it is coming to a point if you are going to be amping to other products for additional feature it would stand to reason to add those external features and have everything lan ip controlled

yep this might be man packable however my opinion this looks like something you mount in a base, not something you would use as a augmentation tool for data and voice on the go..

what is the cost for the whole thing???

That looks stupid expensive. I'm not real familiar with those bands but are there a lot of people using it in the amateur world? I can probably see businesses using but if it's not popular enough that making contacts is going to be really limited it would be a hard sell for me.

It will definitely need band data out and a line to key amplifiers to be a good seller but I’m looking forward to trying it out. N2OA

How about an all mode 2m rig, BT Mic, BT tablet add on with control, programing and Winlink pre installed.

Maybe one could bring his/her tablet, and download apps.

I'm surprised that you didn't ask him that since Icom is going through all the trouble to make an all mode radio 2 meter through SHF why did they leave out the 1.25 meter band.

In my opinion for that reason alone Icom continued to drop the ball with this one.
