Mini Travel Guide

Where to stay in Benelux?

These are some of the hotels we’ve stayed at in Benelux and would recommend:

Luxembourg is very expensive and hotel prices can be high but since it’s such a small country it’s possible to save money by staying in neighboring Belgium, Germany and France and driving into Luxembourg each day. We stayed in Thionville, France which is 12 miles south of the border (15 minutes drive).

What to do in Benelux?

These are some of the activities we recommend doing in Benelux:

Go cycling – these countries have some of the best cycling infrastructure in the world, it’s a great way to get around but also a fun activity in its own right
Explore old villages – there are plenty of these in all three countries
Sample local foods – see the section below for some of our top recommendations
Go and see some Dutch windmills – a good place is Zaanse Schans, a small village surrounded by canals, not too far from Amsterdam. Kinderdijk is probablt the most famous and is close to Rotterdam
Enjoy the local beers – especially in Belgium, in our opinion Belgian beers are the best in the world. A Kwak or a La Corne are worth trying for the special glasses they’re served in
See the castles of Luxembourg – for a country so small, there are plenty of options
Go hiking – Mullerthal in Luxembourg is a popular place for a hike as well as the Ardennes in South Belgium

What to eat in Benelux?

These are some of the foods you have to try in Benelux:

Frites – A speciality of Belgium but good in all countries
Mussels – Particularly good in the coastal areas
Ostend Fish – a fish, commonly sole fillets cooked in a creamy sauce with shrimp, it can be hard to come by but well worth the effort
Waffles and Chocolate – two of Belgium’s most well know specialities
Stroopwafles – a Dutch special, caramel sandwiched between two thin waffles
Old Amsterdam Cheese – if you’re in Amsterdam, you must at least try a sample in one of the cheese shops, if you like it it’s much cheaper to buy from a supermarket
Ribs – If you’re in Leuven, Resto Ribs is worth a visit for Ribs cooked to perfection, we’d visit just for them
