Andrew, I understand stand, I worked as a contractor to the usaf. While working one day and got an email that was classified secret I’d out lined a flight mission that was coming up where they were using a radar test bed aircraft to stand in for a global hawk to track something that was specified. So I call the sending authority listed and he was nice enough to walk me through figuring out who sent me an uncleared eng. technician. And then what to do with the documents that I received. Issue from what I know to day that been document should have unsendable on the niper network . I later got a clearance plus this was not the first time or last some one sent me such a gift. Further that why you should never email by blindly picking out a group of people to receive your email!

I can tell you this: If I were to make any such mistakes as to bring classified home, I'm getting fired and possibly charged with a crime. I'm not saying that Presidents should necessarily be treated that harshly, but it also shouldn't be such a casual thing. If Congress is ok with Presidents taking classified home, they need to require them to have a classified safe and to use it!

Also, regarding earlier points, I was told explicitly that a classified document, if it doesn't have any actual classified information in it, is still classified until and unless it's been declassified by an authorized declassifier. And an unclassified document that has classified information cannot be treated as an unclassified document because it has classified information in it. I don't see too many actual documents, but it literally does not matter if there's no markings on it. For example, if I or someone else are drafting a document which will be classified because it has classified info in it, but we haven't submitted it to a classifier yet, it's already classified because of the information in it. Of course if such a document were to fall in someone else's hands and they didn't know it had classified info in it (like maybe it's a classified cipher key but it's just an alphanumeric series that looks like nonsense) they aren't to blame for throwing it in the unclassified trash, and won't be held accountable for it.

Regarding blacking out all the lines, that's still classified. The document has to go through a declassifier. That's what I was told, and I get the annual refresher every year telling me that everything is classified until it's officially not. There's no informal way of making anything unclassified. Even if you spilled black paint all over it.

doesn't the sitting president have the ability to classify and unclassify documents with little red tape? perhaps I'm wrong I'm just a normal dude that got into politics but I thought being a commander in-chief if their is a document, tangible with in his reach and he can access those are ones he can declassify I though. I different view what if he is not in possession or has not seen touched or had access to like if there are docs at a military base that are top secret and classified, does he wield the power to declassify or could he know of documents in the same location and turn them into a classified document cutting off any future access to someone with clearance. there are so many nuances I couldn't imagine how tedious it could get from a legal view point. any clarification would be highly appreciated. cheers

The time has come to start releasing old classified information. Keeping secrets from the taxpayers is criminal.

This guy is a clown. There are 100% answers for every question he had about “is it still classified” and he is dead wrong about the idea that a document with classified information in it, if not marked, is not classified. It absolutely is still classified information.
