Looking at Byzantium:
What the world sees--a declining medieval power holding onto vestiges of former glory despite intense political corruption eating it away from the inside, an outdated army, and enemies pushing in from all sides.

What a Byzantium player sees--marble statues adorning magnificent imperial palaces surrounded by the emperor's "legions" (really just a bunch of dismounted latinkon). The emperor insists the dark ages never happened for some odd reason.
