Press Conference: Governor Abbott to run for re-election

Gov. Greg Abbott held a news conference Tuesday in San Antonio with sheriffs from across the state of Texas.

The event was livestreamed at 3:30 p.m. in the 9200 block of Broadway.

Governor Abbott announced his run for re-election on Saturday in McAllen, Texas.

Abbott began by thanking more than 50 Sheriffs from across Texas for their endorsement. “To serve as a law enforcement officer is to answer a higher calling. It means putting yourself between danger and the people you serve. It requires true courage, dedication and a strong desire to protect those in need. We must never take our law enforcement officers for granted,” Governor Abbott said.

Bill Waybourn of Tarrant County. Sheriff Waybourn added, “When the Biden Administration aborted their constitutional duties and forsook their oath, Governor Abbott immediately stepped into the gap and took up the heavy yoke of securing our border.”

Abbott also talked about Texas' continued efforts to secure the border and support law enforcement.

"The failed border policies of the Biden Administration have left Texas to defend itself against the resulting challenges of increased illegal border crossings, deadly drugs, and human trafficking across our state, and I thank the local leaders and law enforcement officers here today who have stepped up to work alongside the State as we solve this crisis and keep Texans safe," said Governor Abbott.
