In this video we cover the unboxing of the Gamerz Tek Mini Gen HD HDMI-equipped Genesis Clone system.

I admit it, I'm a Nintendo Fan. I have owned every single home console from the Big N, and yes that means I even own a Wii U. But that doesn't mean that I didn't have one eye looking at what the others were doing. Blast what and CD who? Mortal Kombat got real blood? Awe man!

Well I did eventually pick up a Genesis and there are some amazing titles for it. I even own a Model 1 Genesis today and find many of the titles available on both the SNES and Genesis, well, the Genesis version is superior. My preferred way to play Earthworm Jim? The Genesis version.

Gamerz Tek has been making clone consoles for some time and has their own clone Genesis compatible system called the Mini Gen. They've recently updated the system with an HDMI output so that all you Sega Fans can get access to HD Genesis running on hardware, not software, just like your Nintendo-loving rivals.

The Mini Gen HD is small, about the size of a Genesis 3. The unit itself is a top-loader with front-mounted controller ports, composite and HDMI outputs on back, a Micro-USB port on the back for power, O/J switch for NTSC and NTSC-J game compatibility and a 16:9/4:3 switch. HDMI, Micro-USB power cable and composite video cables are all included, as is a 5V 1A power supply. At a surface level, all good stuff.

A pair of 6-button controllers are included and they feel pretty nice. The D-pad accurately replicates the original Genesis 6-button controller and even features the rarely used Mode button on top. The buttons feel very good and I like that the controller feels a little larger than some of the other 6-button controllers I've recently used.

Bench-testing the pin connectors the Mini Gen HD has a good grip and positive snap when you insert a cartridge but it doesn't have a death grip on it. One thing I did by mistake was try to pull my Sonic and Knuckles out at an angle. There's an opening on the side of the cart that I got stuck. Well, that's my Derp moment of the day.

Overall the unit feels solid, controllers are good and, in my quick test, it does appear to play Sonic 3 and Knuckles without issue. I like the overall feel and appearance of the controllers, but the console itself is a little uninspiring to look at. But at the end of the day it's less about how it looks and more about how it plays games and I am very optimistic with what the Gamerz Tek Mini Gen HD holds under it's molded shell. It may just be the clone console that, not only Genesis fans have been waiting for, but have deserved. Beside, isn't it time someone besides Nintendo gets the love?

For some reason my gamer tek won’t turn on I don’t know why. Is it because it’s dusty or something cause if so I’ll dust it off

These are excellent for $25. They're SNES clone is amazing! Looks just like the north American version and has a sweet blue led. Plays pal and Japanese too. The standard version is $40. There's a HD version but it's white with blue button. The standard is traditional Gray with purple buttons. Gamerztek

Excellent. I bought one and have enjoyed it w my 10yr old. Yes it plays everdrive and repros. Sound is decent. And the controllers are best remakes other than Asccii.

Gary, what’s the difference between the blue box, and the red box? They still the same console? I mean is the red box for Japan, and the blue box for USA? Or they both the same.🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is fine. But can it play Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Knuckles?

Seriously though, do multicarts and everdrives work with it? How about the 32x?

1) Do you own the Fei Hao "HD Retro Game"? Have you heard of it? I'd be curious if this is a repackaged Fei Hao or if it's different, internally.

2) Is the sound in stereo or mono?

good thing my friend. However there is a game that can't play any genesis clones including the genesis 3 is Virtua Racing because is incompatible with the SVP or Sega Virtua Processor.

There are to s of genesis clones and the retrons lol so not left out at all. Compatibility unless original or fpga is nothing to write home about. And all genesis clones never get the sound right making it sound like crap.
