He actually wanted to say he can beat you at pool with a chopstick, but Efren is too humble to say it.

He's not saying that $10 cue stick is better than the expensive ones. He's saying that he was only a newcomer when he came to US and no one will give him a cue stick for free. He also said that if someone did offer him a stick, he would be reluctant because he's not used to that stick. So he decided to just use the cue stick he's used to.

He unknowingly showed people that you don't need to a expensive stick to be great.

This proves the theory that the Steve Mizerak wrote in his player's guide, that a true player can play with any stick, even if it was warped, as long as it has a good tip a good player can find the bend and align it with his or her stroke and make it playable. What a legend Efren is!

It's not is $10 cue stick coming from the Magician Efren Reyes. It means it doesn't give you the edge if you do not have the skills. Skills first no matter what.

Perfect example of "Its not the arrow its the Indian" A cue is only as good as whoever is holding it and if Efren is holding it its magic!!

Thank you, Efren, for what you said. People who are in shock to believe he never used the prime cue sticks of the day should understand something. You do the best you can with whatever you have and once you become comfortable with a stick you are good to go. How about the possibility of making a living using a house stick in a gin mill? Do you expect someone can go into a bar with a pool table and make money hustling if they brought in a two piece cue stick? Are you kidding? No, you grab the best stick available, chalk it up good, don't make too many fancy shots and you'll do well. Because, however good you are, your understanding of the game is superior to anyone you are playing. And remember, in a bar with all the humidity in the air you're restricted to what you can do so you need to play position to follow up rather than draw back. Efren, not only are you the best but your humility and respectfulness was always noticeable. Continue to entertain people all over the world. You are a living legend.

Just to put additional info here, when Efren mentioned his cues broke, he meant the shafts were terribly warped. Remember this was back in the 80s, there were still no fancy techs on shafts to prevent or at least prolong against warpage. Efren plays more hours than your average pro or money gamers thus his shafts would eventually warp. Just him having a new shaft won't cut it. He usually needs more time with them.

If only pool have a lot audience, Efren's story can be adapted in a movie.

I once walked into a pool room full of players all with custom cues. I took the straightest cue I could find off the wall and in short order lost all my money.

the important consideration in choosing the cue stick is 1. the tip must be in good condition, right size and hardness. 2. should really be very very straight. 3. the user will be comfortable with the weight and lenght.. whatever the brand is…if i have these basic requirements, im set…..Shaft and Wrap materials are secondary considerations… the rest of the performance depends on the one whos using it, which is the most important thing..

During Efren's heyday, he could beat you with one eye closed, left handed with a house cue. That's no lie.

I once bought a cue from a guy who was down on his luck. I paid him $200 for a custom made Greg Hearn 19.5 ounce cue that he had paid $1500 for. It was a thing of beauty with 15 different kinds of wood in the inlays so I figured it was a good deal. But there was some trouble with cue. I couldn't make shit with it. My shots were always that tiny bit off and my shape was always lousy. I tried repeatedly to figure out what I was doing wrong but in the end I went back to my 19 ounce $40 sneaky Pete from leisure world.. I kept the Hearn in my case just for kicks but I never used it. About a year later the guy I had bought the cue from wanted to buy it back so I sold it to him for $250 (Interest you know) and he was happy until about 2 months later when the shaft split into two separate pieces.
I still have the Pete and I still use it on those rare occasions that I play.
