Epiphone SG Standard ’61 | First Impressions with Arianna Powell

The Epiphone SG Standard ’61 is inspired by the original Gibson model introduced that year. The Mahogany neck and body in classic Vintage Cherry finish sports the period-correct smaller pickgaurd and new Kalamazoo headstock. Two Probucker pickups deliver the powerful, resonant tones that the SG is known for.

We invited guitarist Arianna Powell to check out the new Epiphone SG and compare the feel and features to the the one she takes with her on the road.

I like the vertical lines in the wood grain. I didn’t know an SG was light — or at least this one is. I like that. This guitar sounds really loud, lots of power.

In Australia this is $850 and the Gibson equivalent $3000. So I bought an SG, a Firebird and a 59 Les Paul standard outfit with the Gibson custom shop p/ups and electronics included- for $3500

I was fortunate enough to meet Les Paul once...for about 30 seconds ...about 25 years ago. He was brutally honest. He said a "a guitar is only as good as the guy playing it...and a GOOD guitar player can play anything. NO excuses ". So...I have played $50 junk guitars and $25, 000 classics and have come to a conclusion. I still need to hit the woodshed and learn new chops! Practice, practice, practice!

It's incredible to think that Arianna Powell is a bass guitar player, but she is a pretty awesome six string player also. If she sounds this good on guitar, how does she sound playing the bass?

Even if AC/DC is one of the first groups I thought of if ever I see the SG, I am also as much predisposed to think of Tommy Shaw, Barry Godreau, Terry Kath, Michael Nesmith, Dicky Betts, Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana or the first guy who inspired me to pick up the guitar, Eric Clapton.

I have got one issue. During recent visits to my local Guitar Center outlet near Times Square, I have noticed a few Gibson SG models which are priced below $1, 500 USD before tax. My curiosity is, what does each of those economy SGs, the higher priced ones that go for several thousand dollars or this model by Epiphone have that the others don't?

I’m looking at one now that’s exact SG new old stock with SG tag on headstock on difference for $265 with hardcase. Playing Ibanez RG 370DX but have to tune everytime I pick it up! I want this with SG!#🎸😈
