2 Trains Race WB at Horseshoe Curve!

After hearing that 932 WB had 3354 leading. I decided for the Curve for a great shot. Dispatcher routed 932 up Two behind a 401 Empty Coal. 23M was Routed up Three. I knew 23M would be Cleared before 932 showed up. But then hearing a 21M coming up behind 23M. Called Approach at Altoona when 932 called 238. The Rest is all in the Video. Enjoy!. The first 2 or so minutes is the train climbing up the hill to the curve. A good set of headphones will make the audio better. 5/10/2013.

OMG.  As many times as I have been to HSC over the years (since 1989) I have never seen two trains heading westbound at the same time. Too cool.  I am sure the dispatchers did whatever they needed to do to ensure both trains reached their destinations safely.

Grew up going there as a child. Recent passing of my grandmother had me on YouTube looking for some videos. Sure brought back a lot of good memories. Thanks for sharing.

The colors and soft tones in this are remarkable. It looks like a painting in motion!

Reminds me we haven't been to the Curve in a while. About time to do something about it.

Great video!

Thanks!

Nice video and scenery! It sure is nice to see someone else's territory. Love the sound of the trains grinding away long before you can see them. I run from Eugene Oregon to Klamath Falls Oregon in the Cascades on what used to be the Southern Pacific RR. The grade is about 45 miles long, ranges from 1.5%-1.8% and has 21 tunnels.

CSX and UP jointly run a 90 car produce train from Seattle, WA to Amsterdam, NY five day service, Train starts out as UP's "Z" train to Chicago, IL CSX crews it (UP units are now run through power) from Chicago to NY, the warehouses(which are refrigerated) built on both ends for this train service was built in a horseshoe shape to accommodate the whole train, after it gets emptied it runs empty back to Chicago, UP again crews it to Seattle I believe five trains a day run this route, it is the only train in the system that has priority over all regular freight, premium UPS, stack trains and even Amtrak service. (From a story in the the magazine Railway Age.)

Wish I could find any pics or video of the fiber optic cable install construction train that laid Sprint's fiber thru this area back in fall/winter 1987.  I was on an Amtrak from Lima Ohio to Philly and caught it in the Horseshoe area.   I am a railfan by nature so was excited to see the curve live anyway, but I am also telecom by trade - so what a TREAT !  I recall a rotary trencher mounted on a flatcar looking utility frame of some sort -  MASSIVE !   it had to go at least 30' across and was able to fold down diagonally and dig into the right of way .    I've have never seen anything of the sort before or after.    Unless it takes 6 - 8 Sprint pick-up trucks on site, as locate service,   I am sure it was a Sprint project.

Being an NS engineer, its something magical to see another train passing on the curve, 2 is awesome, once you get 3, that's even better, but seriously the name of the video needs changing, speed limits only 35-40 on the I go passed this almost every day, and if you think its busy here go to Gallitzin tunnels, it gets almost crazy there with the traffic.

That was hot and with that rain and squeal which two really don't mix, mixed together anyway, made this beautiful

Thanks for making the difficult walk to make your video, also the fly's were nature's way of announcing something BIG was on the move!

I rode through Horseshoe Curve EB back in 1993 when the Broadway Limited was still running. Fun trip to and from Chicago: WB on the Lake Shore and EB on Broadway. The trains to Pittsburgh of course still go through Horseshoe Curve. It's a very cool thing to do, and the scenery through the mountains is spectacular. I did it in snow in the first week of March.
